Ski season is on the way! With 4 sets of skis, boots, and gear for the family to lug around (in addition to clothes, dog, and the rest of the generic family holiday stuff), I'm finally succumbing to the fact we are going to get a box for the roof of the car.

I have always used Thule bars and ski/ board mounts in the past and been impressed with the minimal wind noise from them, so have been looking at their brand of boxes available second hand on ebay, gumtree, et al. I completely underestimated the number of options available! eek and that is just from looking at one brand so far too!

Evolution 100, Alpine 500, Pacific 100, Polar 200, Odyssey 325... Can anyone help please?

It's for the top of a Grand Cherokee, with adjustable roof bars already fitted to the factory side rails. Ski lengths are 175cm max.

Suggestions on other brands very welcome too, although definitely not paying new prices after looking at the circa £200 premium over the equivalent second hand box!

probably the best brand to go for.
the number used in the description to refer to the number of litres capacity.
I would say bigger is best especially on a larger car, you can never have too much room.
Check sizes carefully as some are more general purpose boxes and not long enough for skis.
check for car park barrir damage .

Thanks. I've emailed a few on ebay, as they have listed the litres, but not the length.
Atlantis 780, and Alpine 700 seem good so far.

Any other brands to keep an eye on other than Thule?

I bought one of these.

http://www.thule.com/en/CZ/Products/Snowsports/Ski...

Cavernous, easy to attach/remove. Opens from either side. Can't go wrong.
So handy to be able to load up several pairs of wet skis and boots straight into the box if you are in the carpark.

Bit pricey maybe.

Edit: st they are a lot more expensive now than 4 years ago! I think I paid about 300pounds for it.

I've got a Thule Atlantis. Very good box - hardly notice its up there as the shape is very streamlined. Takes seconds to pop it on and off.

Thule are good and fit well - consider renting though if it's just for one trip a year, when I drove to the Alps it was about £35 for use of one for a week (plus a few days on either side) versus £200+ to buy new. There are usually plenty on ebay too.

Also, while it's tempting to get something enormous, the rated roof load for most cars means you won't actually get a lot in there before you exceed it.

I've done quite a few autobahn runs with the Atlantis 900 on top of my Mondeo wagon, cruising up to 190km/h without any problems at all. Fuel economy takes a bit of a hit though.
