Afternoon all

I've been looking at purchasing a plate that would be perfect for me, and if I can get the price down I'll buy it, but will I be wasting my money?

I don't expect the plate to appreciate but just worry it'll be worth nothing in years to come. I was thinking I'd pass it on to my son when he's older and he can put it on his own car, or if he ever needed cash he could sell it on. The plate relates to both of us as it's our surname.

Will I be wasting money on this? As I said, it don't need to appreciate, just don't want it to lose money

They are worth what people will pay for them. There's no hard and fast rule. Something that spells out a common surname will have value whereas a bunch of obscure initials won't.

In general terms as the DVLA keep releasing more plates unless its something special it will probably depreciate.

Secondly it depends how long you are willing to wait when selling.

DAV1D is always going to be worth a lot

S22 MSD (your initials etc) is worth bugger all

I'm gonna take a punt on it. It will relate to many people so could have many potential buyers if I or one of my kids needed to sell.

Bear in mind the HUGE mark up the dealers ask for.

My Dad deals in plates and sells a few from the Sunday Times but ads cost and it regularly takes months.

Reg Transfers etc might sell a plate for £5k and only return you £3k so check first.

Yep, I guess my point was if it requires dodgy spacing and still doesn't look like your name to 99% of the people out there then I personally wouldn't bother. I would however like something along the lines of F458 BEN and the car to match it

Change your name by deed pole to match your existing reg number. Far cheaper.

Seriously, though, if it's a decent (common-ish) set of letters and some good numbers, you won't lose money long term. If you're looking for a quick return, maybe get one from a DVLA auction, but don't pay over the odds.

Always check with the DVLA to see if the plate is available through them. If you buy through the typical private companies trading in plates, they're often quoting the same sticker price as DVLA, but PLUS VAT, rather than including it, as the DVLA advertise pricing.

The plate is perfect for me.

I'll see how much I can get it down to. I know how much I'm willing to pay, so we'll just have to see how much they want a sale
