What cars did you used to see on the road all the time, but are now a rare sight? I'll start with
Escort mk 5,6,7,
Astra mk3
Frontera
Fiesta mk 4
Mondeo mk1
Laguna mk1

Easier to take a different approach - how many cars on the road do you see with prefix style number plates (ie pre 51)

It surprises me but they really aren't common on the roads any more and we are only talking 10 years or older

I still see quite a few Escort's to be fair (no jokes please) but its been a while since ive seen one in good nick. I must say the mk1 Mondeo mustve been culled in the scrappage scheme, mere handfuls left on Auto Trader now.

There are three where I work. Sad to say (really?) according to a chap from the Mondeo owners club there are more Morris Minors on the road than MK1 Mondeos.

Very true. When I moved into my uni accommodation I expected the car park to be full of old bangers, but every single car here is post-2001, barring my D-reg...

Ive probably got the oldest car in my work's car park i think. 53 plate 3 series, 54 plate Volvo S80, 09 plate Fiesta. One car which i had no idea what it was so i had to go over and have a look, turned out to be a Kia Magentis, 05 plate. Also your general Astra and Focus fare which just blend into the background.

The thing is, the Cortina went out of production in 1982 and later ones well preserved in sparkling nick are quite desirable now, a car which everybody had but nobody took notice of at the time is now something which some enthusiasts would love to get their hands on. In 25 years will the mk1 Mondeo be the same? I have my doubts.

Taking the difference in build quality will a Mk1 Mondeo make it thirty or forty years?

Out of the three at work, two are ropey at best and the other is a one (pensioner) owner from new car in near concourse condition. The chap paid £700 for it and offen parks it next to my Rover. He only uses the Mondeo when the weather's too crap for his Z4.

I haven't seen another Rover 213 on the road either (there are only 43 of those left).

Mk I or II Mondeos.

Vauxhall Senators, Omegas, Carltons and Cavaliers (all shapes), Calibras, Astras up to Mk III, Novas (I don't think I've seen a Nova Saloon for a decade or more).

BMW E21 Threes, E28 Fives and E23 Sevens. It's a while since I've seen a non-M Z3 too now I think about it. E30 Convertibles, loads for sale, none being driven.

Merc W126 and 140 S Classes - I see them plenty in the classifieds, but honestly can't say when I last saw one being driven.

Funny you should mention that - I was overtaken on the M1 Southbound the other day by a Mk7 Escort who certainly wasn't hanging about... at an estimate, I'd say by the speed he disappeared from view, he must have been doing an easy 120-125 when the rest of the traffic was between 75-85... Quite literally there one minute, and away the next.

First one I've seen in a long time, and judging by how it was bouncing along while being hustled that quickly, I don't think it's going to be long for this world either!

Fiesta mark 2 was very common when I passed my test. Mind you it was 1996! Going along with other posters, the Escort mark 4, Sierra, Nova, and Metro are very rare sights now. Quite sad really. I would much rather see them than a crappy eurobox. Someone said pre 51 plates are not that common anymore. My 1999 V plate just passed the MOT today with no advisories. She's rust free and I and intend on getting many more years out of her yet.

Volvo 340 and 440.

Whoh! Hold the phone. The 440 was a 4x4 according to Wikipedia? That cannot be right...can it?
