An eventful, motoring week for my better half as follows;

<> Someone drove into the back of her knocking off her exhaust
<> brakes failed (luckily whilst I was driving and more fortuitously no damage to anyone or the car)

So I had planned to buy her a car early in the new year, the plan has now swung into action.

The cars on the short list are as follows;

Mini Cooper S (JCW if pre-2005)
Clio Sport
VW mk5 GTI
BMW 1Series

Budget is around 6,500

She only does approx 5,000 miles per year so no need for an oil burner.

Let the suggestions commence......

Why, in particular?
If she's not fussed about "image" a RS Clio is where I'd go. Much better drive than the Seat.

If image is important then MINI everytime. Good mk1 looks great is a great drive

Ironically she liked the Clio, but the Cupra R looked to 'Barry boy' in her own words!

Mini:Slow depreciation and good image.
Clio:Good - when it's not broken down.
GTi: Most practical and good performance.
BMW: hurl Why?

I'm hovering between the Mini and the GTI at the moment, tempted to get her the Mini first and see how she gets on with it.

Personally I don't think the 260bhp turbocharged Mazda has any issues competing in the excitement stakes against the likes of the VW Golf, but each to their own I guess.

Oh dont get me wrong 260bhp is not insignifficant, but its like looking at the inside of a brown paper bag......

Got to say I agree, 260 ponies would be good but it's a little bland for her taste.

Front runner is looking like the R56 Cooper S at the moment.

Styling's always going to be a subjective thing, but I think the MPS is better looking (and a better car in general) than anything else suggested on the thread so far. But then, in this instance, the only opinion that really counts is that of the OP's good lady. smile

Clearly no car sales people on this thread - get the car I like rather than what suits her needs:

Are there children / elderly people that need transporting

How important is boot space

Are you an enthusiast driver or just want to get from A to B

What equipment must be present / be nice to have

Is image important

Based on answers to some family logical / common sense questions th ideal car could be anything between a Skoda Fabian to an MX5
