Polished Alloys

I have a set of mercedes AMG wheels with a polished outer rim, every few weeks the rim gets brake dust eating into it and its a pain to keep polishing them.

So can i polish them and get the whole wheel laquered? I have also seen wax for this but how long does the wax last, I would like something permanent.

What do you do other than clean then every week?

I think you've opted for the wrong wheels if you're not prepared to keep them clean.

They still need cleaned and polished very regularly though.

Oh, and dont use a power hose on them, or any wheel cleaner spray on stuff.

I covered the polished rims of mine with Poorboys wheel wax (pink stuff). A few coats did a decent job, but I was told by Lepsons it wouldn't last forever, and indeed a year on you can see the lacquer cracking in places.

How long does the wax last/protect on unlacquerd wheels?

Sorry, no idea. Unlacquered, I can't see it lasting long though.

The only permanent solution is a fully painted finish. Lacquer will get stone chipped and that looks terrible.

There's apparently a new type of ceramic 'nano' lacquer that is being used now which is apparently very good. It gets applied in the same was as powdercoating, but does not bubble or peel. Might be worth checking out.

Just thinking I could buy EBC pads all round, this would help as they are low dust.
I had them on the front of a car a few years back and it was strange to see the back wheels get dirty and the fronts stay cleaner.

get them powder coated and put this on once a year

Can you get powder coating in clear? I did'nt want to lose the polished metal effect.

Yes but it doesn't stick as well to the polished surface
One set I had looke polished even with the PC.

You could get some brake disc dust cover;



Not seen any in real life though, and there is the distinct possibility that they will look odd or naff. Anyone have any experience of them?

My 944 came with some on the front wheels, they do look very naff and can't see them being good for brake cooling either.

I had these SSR GT3s on my Merc which had a polished rim with clearcoat/lacquer over and never had any problems, just washed them with soap and water.



These days you can get just about any effect you like with various wet paint/powder coat techniques... This is a set I had done last Winter...
