Hi can someone tell me why my daughters 1998 mazda mx5 failed it's mot last year on emissions until the helpful mechanic said take it for a good long drive and it will probably be ok.To her delight he was right. But a year on and here we go again,"failed" they put it on a diagnostic machine and it reads perfect again but still failed. Is there an answer out there to this problem? He said to fit something which will cost about £500.00 but may not fix it.

Post up the results as that'll tell a lot about what might be wrong.

At £500 I'd say they was looking at replacing the cat? Could always be the MAF sensor though - but they are more like ~£150.

Just my untechnical guessings.

You can pick up a replacement cat for just over £100. £500? Run! Where in the country are you?

You could always ask the MOT tester what the car failed on. You are allowed to shop around and you could even take the car elsewhere for repairs if you want to.

Probably an oil change and an Italian tune up would work wonders.

So, ask them why their diagnostic machine says one thing and their MOT emissions check another thing.
One has to be wrong.
