Now, I've spun my car before but now realise how different this is.

Was going along a tight road with cars parked either side. Maybe room for two cars but very tight. Was travelling along at c.15-20mph (20 area) and as I'm nearing the winder section where the parked cars finish, the MINI comes belting along wide into the road, causing me to brake quite hard, as I'm nearing to a stop (necessary, passenger confirms this) I get smacked from behind.

I've got a towbar, so no crumple on the bumper, but the car got a fair jolt from this.

So, we stop, I try keep in control. Hazards and handbrake on, check on Claire in the passenger seat, she is in agony. As I gather my marbles I get a fair pain in my neck, but thought best of it and went to check on driver of the car that hit me.

Opened door and he's not checking us or anything, he's on the floor checking the cars and picking up shrapnel.

"you alright?" I ask him only to be retorted with "WHY did you stop?! You had Right of way!"

The mini was already there, regardless if it was my right of way or not I'm not going to drive head on into another car because I can...

His car, smashed. Bonnet, bumper, burst rad.
Bent power socket on towbar for mine and a scratch on bumper.

Blah blah, sorted insurance details, though he's convinced that it was my fault. Though I noticed earlier he was very close, ie. Couldn't see his number plate due to him being so close.

Meh, move on. 3 hours waiting in A&E. Neck very sore, back sore. Not looking forward to tomorrows pain.

Don't really know why I'm posting this. Probably just to get it off my chest but seriously, can't catch a fking break. Only now I realise how angry I am about this. Just started getting the car the way I wanted it, saving up for a service and this happens. Makes me wonder if it's worth having ambitions for anything nice. My brother got rear ended in his bright yellow S1 Elise in traffic not long ago, due to not being 'seen'.

Some people really grind my gears. GYYAYAARRGHHH. ow.

The standard response is

"If you hit the car in-front - you're a c**t" - it's his fault and his insurer will be paying for all your damages and losses - esp if you'd like to have a chat with a claims management company (which you'll need to if you want a hire car and other losses recouped).

GL - it's only a car - get the people fixed first and all that...

If I'm honest. I was more concerned with everyone being okay, my friend was feeling sick sighing 5 minutes and started spewing, don't know whether it was from shock, illness or just cause she fancied a hurl but felt so guilty for putting her through it, even though it's not my fault.

Really fed up. Lying on my back on the sofa, will more than likely have tomorrow of work (on feet for several hours carrying things, darting about etc) which I really don't want. Wait and see but just really don't need this.

Don't underestimate shock, it can of course be "delayed".

Hopefully everyone will be ok, our bodies are reasonably tough.

You pay insurance, let them sort things.

The most important thing to remember, and this seems to come with age, it doesn't matter how shiney it is, or how proud of it you are, ....... it's just a poxy car, only the people really matter.

Good luck, I hope you feel better in the morning, chances are you will.

Let your insurance company sort it out. They'll get your car back the way it was before the accident. Also inform them that you and your passenger were injured, and they might pass you on to an accident management company, or they'll deal with it in house.

It's just a car, but my first one frown metal can be replaced, people can't though.

Every cloud and all that.

Good to hear you're both on the mend. The car will be sorted and you'll be driving along happily again soon.

Just picture in slow motion the image of that tow ball going through his bumper and rad in super-slo mo. That should help.

He was probably just as shocked as you, and annoyed at his own actions. He would have been straight on the defensive out of embarassment. He was too close and too fast if he couldn't stop in time. Insurance will sort it.

The main thing is to ensure that you and the OH are ok. Get loads of rest and don't try and move about too much or exercise, and don't go back to work too soon. When I got rammed from behind (redface) it took two weeks for the pneck pain to come on proper. I woke up one morning and was unable to lift my head from the pillow, in absolute agony. So take it easy!

You have my sympathy op I got my car rear ended on monday morning and its been written off. I know it was only a shed but it was a tidy shed and I only had it a month!

As the others say it is just a car (awaits flaming) and at least you're alright. Get on to a claim company if you don't want to deal with your own insurance as it sounds like this cock is going to try get out of it. At least in my case the bloke admitted responsibility. Chin up! smile

Is it me, or is this beginning to look like a new way for insurance companies to make money? It seems more and more companies are using these "management companies", who's entire goal seems to be to give you a hire car costing ten times as much as it would do under normal circumstances.

When I needed one, my insurance company just got one from Enterprise at the standard rate.

No wonder premiums are going up.....

And what's worse is many ins cos now want extra to recoup your excess so you're forced to use these management companies.

Sorry to hear about this - a rear-end shunt is often considered a "minor" accident but this seems a pretty violent one, and having a friend or indeed anyone in the car with you does lead to big guilty feelings. You feel that, as the driver, it's your responsibility and if anything happens, you've failed to protect them - especially if it's a girl! But don't worry about that, she will understand completely that this wasn't your fault and that seeing the Mini and stopping hard really was the best thing you could have done!

As people have said, though, he hit you from behind and that really is all an insurance company needs to know, there's no question of any blame being attached to you. Especially if you have the Mini driver as a witness?

Since there are injuries and a rather less than reasonable guilty party involved, I would recommend an accident management company too.

From what I understand it's not that "I have a towbar, but I got a fair jolt" as "because I had a towbar...". The reason for the crumple zone is for the car to take the energy. With a towbar it's transferred to the chassis and far more energy is transferred to the people inside. Therefor it's best not to have a towbar on the car if you don't have to.

I hope you get better quickly and that it's all sorted out without much hassle. Not good about the car.

I'm sorry to hear about the prang, always re-shakes the World and your perspective on things. Are you really in that much pain after what can't have been more than a 15mph crash from the rear?

Bookmarked this thread,

Always nice to have something to refer to on the 'whine, why is my insurance going up again' threads.

Well about ten posts three quarters of which seem to be recommending an accident management company seems a pretty good answer.

Hope you and the girlfriend recover okay. P.S. if someone vomits after an accident they need to be laid flat waiting for someone to do a medical check on them.

Sorry to hear about the prang. I've no idea why the people behind sometimes try to blame the driver they ran into. If you hit the car in front, it's because you didn't leave enough room for them to do an emergency stop.
