Hi all, I am an architect and I have a client who is looking for a car ramp so he can get another porsche into his garage. The garage is not built yet so we can construct the floor to accommodate any additional structure.

There are loads of four and two post ramps on the market but which one would you recommend? I think a 4 post is better as you can get in and out of the car without bumping the door on the post.

Oh yeah, not sure it makes a difference but he is not going to use the ramp for anything other than storage.

Many thanks

Ted

If money is no option - then get a four poster. I cant comment or help anymore as I dont have a lift or know anyone with a lift.
I guess though that you will get what you pay for, have you seen anything on the net taht he likes, maybe give us something to look at and comment on?

With a two post he's going to have to fiddle about putting arms under the car so he can lift it up, a four post he can just drive on.

I have had a look about on tinter web and found these. They look good but guess more research is required before I spend any of his hard earned!

We've got pretty much every type of ramp under the sun in the workshops at work. Having used most, if it was my money and money was no object, I'd choose a two post in ground armed lift every time:

-They take up zero space in the garage when not in use (apart from the arms obviously)

-You can drive on without having to manoeuvre around any posts

-You can still open the doors when it's on the lift

-Unlike a traditional ramp, it's easy to take the wheels off

-The arms mean you have the most access of any kind of lift to the underneath of the car

Personally I'd avoid a traditional ramp as it obscures a great deal of the underneath of the car and makes it really hard to get to the wheel and hub assemblies which are by far the most accessed part of a car if you're maintaining it.

That's a good point... its a bit of a fiddle to do this and if you get the arms in the wrong position its easy to damage a sill. If its just storage a 4 poster would be better, and probably cheaper.

for a storage application I would be happy to use one of the cheaper lifts as it wont be subject the same wear and tear that one in a commercial garage. The Strongman stuff would be OK, I know a few people who have bought their lifts and been happy.

If its a new build in the planning stages it may also be a thought to recess it into the floor.

Two-post ramp is more convenient for routine work in my experience. That way the wheels are off the ground straight away and there is no need to faff about with lifting dollies. I only ever use a four-poster for geometry measurment/adjustment.

It does amuse me how many people cleary didn't read the original post. hehe

I'd get a four-post for that; much more convenient.
