What car? Non lairy, fast, hatch.
Discussion
Theoretical question...
Where I live is not particularly amazing, probably a few years until it can even be classed as 'up-and-coming'. People take notice of nice cars. I like cars that are reasonably quick, and good to drive. I also don't like spoilers, huge exhausts and other look-at-me stuff. I'd like a quick hatch that doesn't really look like anything special.
Don't want an MX-5 before anyone suggests it - need people and largish objects in the back fairly regularly.
Around £5k
Prefer 5 doors but not essential
on the list so far:
debadged Audi S3, although not really fond of the old shape one.
Mazda 3 MPS
Seat Leon Cupra R
off the list
any BMW - too BMW
CTR EP3 - bad rep, too conspicous
Clio 182 - too small
Golf GTI - rep
really it looks like it's between the Mazda 3 and the Leon, anything I'm missing?

Sorry to break it to you, chavs know what they are looking for. A Seat Leon Cupra R is less obvious than an Impreza, but a determined car thief will spot a performance car amongst the mum mobiles no matter how dowdy it might be. Something like an S3 might be quite bland and dull to look at but it will still stand out to a scrotey thief.
Cupra Rs come with a big exhaust as standard by the way.

The 3.2 Audi A3s are about as stealth as it gets, especially on smaller wheels.
Likewise there are a few examples of the BMW 130i about in SE spec rather than M-Sport. On the normal 16/17" 1-series wheels and without the badging, you'd be doing incredibly well to clock it as a performance car next to the sea of slower diesel ones.

Toyota Corolla T sport Compressor.
That would do it if you could find one, but dont buy a regular T sport corolla they are not a hot hatch in any respect (I had one briefy it was rubbish as a hot hatch but ok as a comfy quirky hatch).Good suggestion might be a late mk4 Golf 4motion, well inside your budget so you'd get one with low miles and leather recaros.
Spend £500 to sort out the wallowing suspension and you have a superb all rounder, fast, refined, comfy, loads of grip, cheap to run, very discreet how it goes about its business.

obviously pro car thieves know what theyre doing. im talking about idiots kicking the mirrors off, keying the panels, wanting to race every time i go anywhere, getting pulled over for not actually driving that fast, because i have a loud/fast looking car.Cupra Rs come with a big exhaust as standard by the way.
Civic type s - not fast.

Just out of curiosity, what does 'too BMW' mean? I know its not a hatch, but IMO something like a de-badged 330i would be less conspicuous than pretty much any fast hatch.
just too flash for me really, not really in my opinion, in other peoples. everyone knows a bmw costs like 50 grand or something. init?Considered Golf V6, looks too slushy for me, def not a sporty car.

Definitely! Got to be one of the best sleepershttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-AUDI-A3-3-2-V6-QUAT...
De badge it, and no one will be able to tell the difference in that from a generic 2.0tdi.
Accord type R?
Mg zs 180 per facelift
My first thought was Audi A3 too though to be honest. I remember a mate of a mate used to drive a 1.8t and it looked like a 1.6. Those 1.8s can produce some power with a few tweaks
Won't ever sound like a v6 though!
If I was worried about my car getting damaged though I don't think I'd be spending £5k. £2k maybe at the most and I'd be looking at Accord Type R's (lol) Saxo Vts/306 gti6 etc

Someone kicked the mirror off my 306, and it's not even a GTI so not being flash doesn't stop these things. I would worry about a BMW though, someone keyed every BMW on my street once.
I'd stick to old bangers, V6 Mondeos are cheap and fastish. Or a Leon Cupra (not the R), it doesn't come with a body kit so once you took the badges off it would look like the diesel. You could even put the wheels from the lower spec cars on it to complete the look, they are the same size iirc.

I already have A car, not much point me getting even more of a banger!
that said, I'm not fussed if it is a bit tatty, as long as it goes fast (round corners).
Accord Type R, Mondeo, saloons in general, too big. Passat W8 sounds like it'd cost the earth.
Octavia VRS also considered, but finding it hard to get past the grandad looks, skeptical about VW mk4 chassis (yes i know Leon!)
MG - too obvious looking, I'd rather have the Rover it was based on + some fiddling.
130i, a3 3.2, both tempting, big fan of the shape a3 that was posted too.
Would like something sporty(ish), not just straight line quick. I know this is a big ask as everyone else wants the biggest spoiler and wheels possible.
Mazda 3 a waste of time?

Mazda 3, first one I found, understated looks, good value for money, fast, but they do like to drink. If I could afford the insurance I'd have one in a heartbeat.
