RE: Traxxas XO-1: World's first out-of-the-box 100mph
Friday 2nd December 2011

You'd better pray your other half hasn't already bought your Christmas presents, because we can almost guarantee that this new radio control car, called the Traxxas XO-1 will make it to the very top of your letter to Santa.
Traxxas XO-1: World-first box-ready 100mph RC car
100mph from a radio-controlled car? In scale mph that's, ummm, lots...

This is because its makers claim that it is the world's fastest ready-to-race radio-controlled supercar.
And we are talking properly fast, here: 0-60mph is dealt with in 2.3secs, and the XO-1 tops out at more than 100mph, a speed which it reaches in 4.9secs.
But this isn't something to buy for a 9-year-old. The 4WD, lithium-polymer-battery beast is controlled via iPhone or iPod Touch, and Traxxas politely suggests that "The XO-1 is not a toy and is intended for use by experts only". They also advise that it should be used only on a closed track and that those without a driving licence should steer clear.
We think it looks brilliant. Although at $1099.99 (£700) it's probably a bit pricey for a stocking filler...
Discussion
Thing is, where do you use these? There are and have been for some time 1:10th scale trucks that'll do 60-70mph.
But you need a flippin huge space to use them. Not too mention some sort of insurance, at these speeds they can cause one heck of a lot of damage to people and other objects should an accident happen.
Overall though, fab!

The iphone/touch dock on the controller is very neat - full dash display and datalogging.

Surely at 100mph, something that size is only going to stay in sight for about a second?
My old Schumacher will do about 40mph with the right gearing, and even that seems rather excessive.
Boss Cat or Pro Cat? I always loved the CAT XLSMy old Schumacher will do about 40mph with the right gearing, and even that seems rather excessive.
...sorry brief trip down memory lane there!
Always wondered how long it would be before somebody offered a 100mph model car, Schumacher have had an 80mph nitro model out for a while now.
If my Traxxas Slash 4x4 Ultimate is anything to go by it will be a great model (the 4x4 will according to the book do 65mph on 3s with the right gearing and on road tyres). Starts to loose stability above 50mph though which is the issue. You do need wide open spaces to drive these things, car parks often aren't smooth enough - though that one seemed to handle less than smooth surfaces quite well.
Traxxas are sponsoring a Top Fuel funny car in the NHRA next year, so I wonder if this is a pre cursor to them building an RC Funny car??

Does using the iPhone compromise, or extend the range that the thing can be controlled at?The iphone/touch dock on the controller is very neat - full dash display and datalogging.

This is a proper hypercar concept .... Absolutely pointless, and unusable in nearly every situation, but the world is a better place for such things existing.
If you want to go REALLY fast then this is the thing to have http://www.corally.co.uk/10x-110th-pan-car No need for 4wd centre diff's etc. Keep it simple, light and with lots of downforce.

But will it go off-road like my Savage 4.6 big block?!!!!

That's going to be quite a handful and will need to be used on dedicated circuits, not in Tesco's car park and certainly not without public liability insurance!
I shall be chasing after it with the miniature PROVIDA 2000 switched on for evidence:

Have a look at these things called Spindizzies dating from the 50's and 60's.
Not RC ,but model cars capable of 200mph ( not a scale speed ) with suspension and petrol engines. Bit dated today, but still very cool.

To achieve the 100mph top speed you will need to delimit the speed controllers limiter with an iphone/touch. So its tough luck if you don't have one.
Personally I don't like the idea of something that can be bought off the shelf that goes this fast. It's capable of doing some serious damage at those speeds. A few big accidents won't do the hobby any favours.

Just out of curiosity could some one work out how many rpms those little wheels would be doing at 100mph!? Must be crazy fast, non?
Well, the motor is a 1650kv motor, so on 6S which is 22.2v, gives a theoretical no load motor RPM of 36,630rpm.For fans of the Schumacher CAT, here's the latest one, the CAT SX3.
