Neighbour beat me to it

I have been (semi-seriously) looking for a Mercedes CL500 (circa 2003 year model) as an occasional use vehicle, and lo and behold, to my bewilderment, my neighbour has just acquired one (albeit a pre-facelift year 2000 model).

Get on OK with said neighbour - but not sure how acquiring a slightly newer model of the luxury car he has just bought would come across.

Your thoughts please.

I'll be honest, if I bought a car and my neighbour bought the same but newer then I'd probably interpret it as silly one upmanship.

Having said that, a good mate bought his 318ci a couple of weeks before I got my 330ci, but he already knew I was looking for one, so that doesn't really count.

I would bring it up in conversation you been looking and ask him what he thinks of it etc.

When, having purchased your newer car; ask how much he paid for his. Then, tell him you paid a lot less for yours. Am sure that will make him feel better about the situation.

Say you've been looking for one yourself and ask if he has any advice/things to look out for. You don't have to take his advice but its worth 10 minutes.

perfect excuse - say you've been looking for a while for one and would appreciate his feedback, he gets to big his car up, you get to take 'advice' from him, you get what you wanted all along, he gets to feel helpful.

If he's normal he won't be even slightly bothered by it. I'd use it as a good opportunity to speak to him about it and have a good look over it before buying one yourself.
