Is this a diesel-powered X6 M?

Now that really will get some people frothing at the mouth...

BMW is adding to the already feverish speculation about the possibility of a diesel-powered M car with this teaser-tastic video clip of an X6 M - but is it really an oil-burner?

BMW isn't saying a dickie-bird, other than the fact that this is 'a new chapter powered by M'. So it might be something else entirely.

Any hint of what might be under the bonnet is artfully blurred out in the video, but smart money is going on the fact that BMW is preparing the ground for an M-tweaked version of the X6 with its new tri-turbo diesel installed.

And that is surely going to prove controversial. After all, talk of an M-tweaked diesel 5-series has been tough enough for some to swallow. But an X6 diesel M? It's hard to think of anything more at odds with the original motorsport-driven philosophy of Munich's M division...

I couldn't really care one way or another.

The X6M isn't a real M car, so as far as I'm concerned they can do what they want with it.

I agree with the couldn't care less statement but the X6M is as real an M as a M3/M5 or Z4M that's the BMWs call unfortunately. yes it's not a car for me or probably the uk but BMW wouldn't produce it if they didnt see demand in the USA or china etc....

I agree. As far as I'm concerned this isn't an M car, regardless of what badge they stick to the back.

Love it!
Completely pointless which ticks the want it box for me.
And if AMG can stick thier badge on the G-Wagon then who's to tell BM not to make an M6?

The thing is though the G wagon is quite cool, the X6 is an ugly, ostentatious, pointless SUV like the Cayenne and the Q7.

For the same exact reason that Audi and Peugeot run diesel powered cars in the Le Mans series...

Where is the time that no one ever dared to dream that an oil burning stove would win that kind of races???

Welcome Spaff, what were you doing with them?

I'm constantly changing my mind on the X6, starting to now, even in the short time since my post above. Especially as one of the posts above compares it to the Cayenne - I really like the Cayenne!!

Several issues here.......

1. "The X6" issue. Personally I don't like it. Some do. Who cares?

2. "What is an M car"? From the M1 onwards the evolution of M from racing car to road car continued. This is a debate in itself, but if we can have an M Touring why not an M SUV?

3. "An M Diesel"? Sorry, but as the development & relevance of the diesel continues to surpass petrol it's going to happen. I have 2 M5's and I'm not losing sleep over the day I consider a diesel powered M car.

Agree with this. It is the way the world is going. Not everyone will like it, but provided they keep offering proper M cars with petrol power too, I'm not bothered...
