Just been looking at second hand ones and the Mustang seems to be twice the price of the Monaro/VXR8 - why?

Are they not in the same market segment? or is it like comparing a BMW 1 with a Hyundai Accent?

I don't know how well the Mustangs sell, I should mention first.

Personally, I think the Aussie V8s are better built and handle well. But in the UK a Monaro or even a VXR8 means nothing to most folk. However, many know what a Mustang is and they'll buy that image. The Aussie cars are even RHD, so I don't really get it.

Pretty much the crux of it.

older mustangs are pretty cheap as they weren't very nice to look at

the new shape (2005+) ones look great though, I think that adds a lot to the desirability. plus the cost/hassle of getting a 'new' one means they're relatively rare

Due to DVLA incompetence no one will ever know for certain.

Do you know? There are about 60 2005+ examples in the classifieds. VXR8 plus Monaro is about half that.

the name 'mustang' attracts so much attention.

its just one of those cars.

'oh that guy down the roads got a MUSTANG!!!!'

'wow was that a monaro that just drove past??' 'a what?'

there seems to be a few v6's for sale, for the same price they could have had a v8 camaro.

Vauxhall were giving away the last of the Monaros iirc, they were barely any more than a Vectra VXR by the end.

Mustangs are import only (I think) and have had a lot of duty added on to the price, Monaros and VXR8's were available from GM/Vauxhall dealers in the UK so were never priced as steep.

Monaro's and VXR8's outnumber Mustangs and other Americana several to one so the fact they aren't as rare means you don't pay a premium price.

Because if you mention to a girl that you own a ford mustang, she will drop her pants.

Although if you take her for a ride in either her pants will need to be changed anyway

This 2005 GT just sold on ebay for £10200 but it was a rare occurrence:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110779887026?ssPageName=...

I think the critical differences are that the Mustang has a better depreciation rate due to the image/rarity, it has a low VEL rate of £210 a year, it looks way better and is a ready-made icon that genuinely gets people excited and it's not like the GM cars can seat 5 and I tend to think more Mustangs fall into the "toy" category where if it doesn't sell for what the owner wants, they'd erather keep it and mod it. It has vastly more tuning potential off the shelf than the GM cars even though, in standard form, it needs far more doing to make it handle as well.

I considered selling mine and buying a VXR8 but the GM cars, though I do like them, just don't have the wow factor. I suspect they don't fare as well against the Camaro either.

I'm not sure much of this is correct. How many 'Mustangs and other Americana' are there? Adding all the Monaros to all the VXR8s gives a bit under 1500 cars.

I don't think the VAT and duty is any higher on the imports. Shipping costs may be higher than GM ay to get cars here though.

The fourth generation mustang is similar in looks to the monaro imo and the monaro is probably easier for most to live with being RHD. I think it's fair to say you can buy a 4th gen mustang GT (with a V8) for decent money. I dont think the monaro looks as good as the 5th gen mustangs though (if this is what you are comparing prices with)
I think when you want a 'stang you just have to get a 'stang as there is a certain romance about that with the odd car, it's a bit like the 911 - there is stuff around to compare it to but if you've set your heart on a 911 that's what it has to be.

I think you're confusing the Monaro with the VXR8.....
