Engine oils and their use by date (when opened)

Earlier this evening I had a quick scan of the garage as the oil needs topping up. I found 3 litres of Mobil 5w-40 from my previous car, which is near on 2 years old. I must have used 2 litres previously, will it be ok to use, or safer to go out and get a new bottle?

It's millions of years old, how quickly can it go off? If it's in the proper container and it's sealed so no dust or moisture has got in there it'll be fine.

It's fine. If in doubt, drink it. If it tastes smooth and oily, it's fine...

Use it on Mrs Teddye4687. Very high quality lubricant.

Even if it hasn't been anywhere near your car I would change the oil & filter twice just to be on the safe side.

Can I suggest someone bangs up a brief 'oil tutorial' for PH. There seems to be many stupid questions appearing of late regarding oil.
