Anyone have any experience of these? They're criminally cheap, and I will need one for the weekly commute (hence being petrol doesn't matter).
Are they reliable? Very expensive to run etc etc..

Do you mean a W220 or W140?

The W201 is a 190 or 190e.

ETA - or 190D, before I get out-pedanted.

Eh? I think you must be mistaken. W220 or W140?

edit: blast! Beaten to it by an even bigger anorak wink

My Mercedes anorak isn't particularly big, which makes it nimble and more manouvrable.

My anorak and I can go for gaps more swollen anoraks can only dream about.

OP - ignore us.

Get a W140 S320. Spend no more than £2k. Drive slowly using a charactistic slowly-drift-to-kerb, jerk-back-to-middle style. Park badly. Get a beaded seat-cover and at least 4 Feu Orange.

I'd do the same if I could afford the fuel.

I meant the W220 (oh the shame...)

I've already owned a W140 S320, it was for a brief period, and it was a shed -only paid £500, so wasn't expecting much.

Anyway, I loved the car, everything about it, but they're hard to find with full service history, and as I know they wear their mileages so well, this is vital for me.
The W220 can be had for 3k ish, and at this price I'm willing to take a punt. I'll only really use it for a 220mile round trip a week, and to the shops. And I can't really think of a better mile muncher for the price.

When she was nice she was very very nice, but when she was bad, she was 'orrid.

£3k only buys the worst. Why not a Lexus LS400/430?

£3k goes a lot further and they're every bit as competent. And much better in some important respects, like build quality, gadgets, power and rust-resistance.

Apart from the looks, I quite like the Lexus, but I'm not keen on the servicing and fuel costs of a 4.0 v8. Although this and a S320 I suppose are near identical so a moot point..

I would be amazed if running a LS400 or LS430 didn't turn out to be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than a W220 S320, all things considered.

The Mercedes will be much worse on fuel than an LS430, and I think probably slightly worse than a 400.

Cut my arm and it says Mercedes-Benz through it like a stick of rock

The LS is so good though, impresses me more with every mile.

The W220 is nothing like the W140. Unless you are very, very lucky it will break your heart, your bank balance and your sanity all in one go.

It is not impossible but finding one which won't at £3k ish is one hell of a gamble. There is a reason these cars are given away and it is not just because they are large barges.

When they work they are quite nice to drive but never feel very special and always feel cheap - particularly the early ones.

Buy a Lexus.

I understand Mr Garlick's LS is now in great shape, and probably owes him much more than £3k.

You can make each other happy by buying his car for £3k, and watching with satisfaction as Paul buys the S320 and almost masochistically ploughs his tweed fund and more into straightening it out.

Glad I could help.

(Put me down for the mustard trousers when things get serious. I'll find someone to take them up for me.)

Or W140 E320. But good ones go for crazy money, and I only like the saloons. I will look at Lexus, and it will that help my mate has moved from Suzuki to Toyota as a mechanic. Hellooooo trade prices..

Where are you getting your W-numbers from?

An E320 is either a W124 (which I think is the one you mean), a W210 or a W211.
