Well, the 'hot' topic is cold weather tyres, and I've decided it's time I got some, so am looking for some advise.

Are some brands of cold weather tyres better than others?

If so, which brands are better?
I don't need 'the best' if they are twice the price than an adequate tyre, but I'm not looking for a 'bargain' tyre either, just looking for a decent middle of the road cold weather tyre that will perform well.

Cheers for the advice,

Paul

Have you checked what's available? You're a bit late really - you might find choice is pretty limited.

ADAC 2011 Winter Tyre test for 195/65/15 to get you started.

Semperit Speed-Grip2 and Nokian WR D3 are two of the best mid-range tyres, but the price of Semperits on Mytyres has rocketed now (was £55 each on Friday, £85 each last night for 195 65 15s).

PHers that purchased Nankang SV2s have been impressed by them, though wet performance was found to be lacking in the recent Auto Express test compared with other winter and all season tyres (but still ahead of the Continental summer tyre, just).

Avon Ice Touring and Ice Touring ST have been another popular choice in the mid-price segment.

Depending on what size you need, you may find that on Mytyres the price of the top end tyres from Continental, Goodyear and Michelin is only slightly more than mid-range ones now that prices are changing daily depending on supply quantities.

No, I haven't looked about just yet, I bought some spare alloys today to fit them too, so I'm now on the search.

The Nankang SV2s sound a waste of time, so I wont be bothering with those.

I'll check around for the Touring and Nokian, size are 195/65/16, thanks for pointing out the price fluctions depending on availability, I'll be keen for a deal on a decent set smile

You may indeed, but I will add that I get bored quick of reading threads that don't answer my main query wink

Are you sure the tyres aren't 195/65/R15? 195/65/R16 seems an odd size.

Either way have a look at Kumho, I've used the IzenKW17 and the Izen KW23 and found them both to be decent when it gets cold and excellent in the snow, ice and slush. Reasonably priced too.

Sorry miss.

But like I said, you're a bit late to the party - have you checked what's available? Many people are reporting that winter tyres are sold out now in the UK and even where people will quote delivery they're talking about 8 weeks. To be honest, I would have thought the tyre suppliers based in mainland Europe should be able to get them - maybe you could try?

The other thing you'e done now is quote a very rare size - there's not much point in people waxing lyrical about a particular winter tyre if it's not even made in the size you need.
