0 NCD and car insurance for a 36 yr old.
Discussion
After letting my full NCD drop away in 2008, I am looking to get back into car ownership. I havent needed a car for 3 years now as I have access to my partners, and for the very few times I need to use a car (walking distance to work) I use hers.
I am 36 and have owned a few powerful cars in the last ten years including two group 20 cars. This has helped a bit on the quote for another group 20 car, but I was surprised at the rates. I really wasnt expecting rates of £2.5k on a 911 CS4 I have received from a specialist who quoted Aviva.
Yes, I know I am deemed as high risk with 0NCD, but with no claims or points in 15 years+ I thought it would help?
Anyone have ideas on how to get more reasonable quotes, or is this just the way it is now?

Costs have and still are going up a lot mate. My advice, as an Insurance Underwriter, is to find a good broker in your area and ask them to see what they can come up with. It's not always quite so convenient as the price comparison sites etc, but they will do all the hard work for you and most good insurers aren't on the price comparison sites anyway. You might be surprised what they can come up with.
Call admiral or elephant (same company).
They have a service department that has a lot of discretion when it comes to offering extra or temporary or equivalent no claim discounts.
Even though yours has lapsed they may be able to offer you something.
Especially if you were a named driver on another policy.
I used them to get an equivalent no claims on a second car – so it's a bit different.
But you might get something.
You said you had the use of the GFs car, does this mean you were a named driver so you can prove you have been driving?

Trouble is that I work for a large broker and this is what they came up with! They couldn’t think of any other options, so was hoping there might be another route we hadn’t thought about.lingus75 said:

Try a small local independent broker maybe? The large ones are often too big or owned by insurance companies even.Just a thought.
One other idea.
Stick your details into elephant and see the quotes.
Then give yourself 10 years no claims and see the quotes.
This will at least give you some indication of what the quotes could be if you got a NCB discount.
Maybe get the car insured in the GFs name on a multicar policy with yourself as a named driver?

get hold of a broker. I had A plan match my 6 years NCD onto a second car when I started driving that. I would expect they might be able to 'stretch' your NCD over 3 years as well
Glad you thought A-plan were good as I work for the life division of the company
Unfortunatley, the 'stretch' option is now finished.I have also used Elephant in the past to mirror my NCD, but only being a named driver doesnt help.
Any others??
A bit bleedin' obvious, but have you tried the people you used to be insured with, and your partner's company (if you're named on that policy)?
LV= used to give 50% introductory discount, but their quotes seem very random - good for some people, way out for others with fairly similar circumstances.

Bell were quite good when I opted out of my company car scheme - Unfortunately the real answer is that you're really going to pay for it through the nose. I'd try anything that would reduce it, limited miles, other half with no claims as a named driver etc to see if you can get it down that way...
Blimey. I tried Elephant online with all correct details, including partner named on polic, 6k max mileage per year.
Now, this was a pretty quick quote but as far as I know everything was correct. £750 xs, full comp with no add-ons was £881!! Minimum xs of £400 was £1180 ish so the xs is worth taking.
I am shcoked that after speaking to specialists they couldnt come up anywhere near this. I was insured with Elephant on my last M3 and they were fine. I just didnt think there was even going to a point in trying them.
Looks like the classifieds are worth another look!
