What Happened To The All The Cheap Cars?

Im currently looking for a car with a budget of £300-£400.
It needs at least 2 months T&T and not be too much of a death trap and under 1.6ltr. (dont ask, and no, its not a 'what car' thread!)
Here's my question.. Where are they all?!
Back in the day the classifieds were full of £100 cars with tax and test. Now days I'm struggling to find a working car with any MOT or Tax for less than £450.
I know the price of scrap is high but are we seeing the end of the real cheap run around?
I do hope not..

You'll struggle to get anything with tax and ticket for less than £300 IME, but think outside of the box, pick the right cars, do your homework and haggle hard, and you'll get something half decent for less than £500. You need to not be fussy what it is and buy based on condition rather than the badge it wears though. At that price point you'll be looking for something cheap to fix. I'd suggest something like s ford escort. Hateful cars, but cheap to buy and run.
It makes a difference where you look as well. Ignore autotrader, ignore eBay and ignore the auctions. Use the local classifieds for bargain hunting. And haggle! I ended up with an Audi A3 with 6 months T&T a couple of years ago, advertised for £1200, I paid £400. He wanted to sell more than I wanted to buy...

this is something im doing as a sideline
i buy what would be scrap cars @ scrap value, but get them MOT worthy and sell them on at a little profit. £50/100 maybe
i enjoy doing it, keeps me busy, and the satisfaction of *saving* a car is pretty good!
in the few cars ive been doing, each of them has sold in less than a week, with me making back the original purchase price + what ive spent + a bit for me.
times are hard, people want a cheap hack...supply and demand really!

If you only have one or two at a time, what are they going to do exactly? If you aren't earning a living from it/paying VAT/filling your drive and street with snotters there isn't much there for them to moan about, let alone apply legal sanctions to.Crease said:
