If you're happy, then it's a good deal.

Enjoy the new car.

Id say financially yes but logically no.

You have traded in a fun well built, reliable car with decent MPG for a poor built not so reliable car with only a little bit better MPG and wont be a fraction of the fun.

Depends how much you need 3k. I wouldn't have done it but then I'm not in your situation.

You got close to retail on the swapper - probably more than in a private sale.

The new one was on the expensive side - even with the low mileage, as they were only about £5,500 new after discount.

But even if it was really £6,900 trade in and £4k retail, you're not a million miles off.

surely at 20,000 miles theres not a lot to go wrong, and if something goes wrong its going to be so much cheaper to fix the 1.2 8v petrol than a 2.0 litre tdi

i need 3000 for a house deposit and i need to save on insurance, i would have loved to keep the car frown

Decent price on your Seat, but my £4500 would not be going on a 1.2 Clio...

You'll get people saying you should've bought half a TVR with your £4500. What you have seems like a good deal to me.

Second post in this thread sums it up for me: http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1085652

Use the Clio then treat yourself to a nice second car in a few years time! yes

Personally, I would have looked a lot more at the options, considering four and a half grand can get you a hell of a lot these days. You could have had something a bit more lively with better build quality and still had change.

Each to their own though, considering your circumstances. I'm in the same position and needing to sell my 325 to fund a house and will be looking at something for under £2k in a few months time. There is such a long list of possibilities for me for that kind of money and my biggest problem will be choosing what I want.

the only other cars i could see with 47mpg quoted (so 40mpg real terms) were 1 litre corsas which ive already had and volkswagen polo which i could only get a 50 plate on trade in, with many more miles

Is the fuel economy really that important? Something slightly bigger or better built won't necessarily be too far off of what you mention above. You can still find something with a reasonable engine size and not compromise on the enjoyment of the vehicle.

I'll undoubtedly be looking at another 3 series E36 or 5 series E39 when I come to change, mainly because I've enjoyed the last few E46's I've owned, but surely going for something like a 316/318 won't hurt you too much in terms of fuel economy.

As I said before, its your call as its your money and you need to be happy with what you buy. I just think that spending £4.5k on a Clio may have warranted a bit of additional research as you could have found yourself something similar size and economy-wise for about half that.

for that price i would have got a much older car with a lot more miles on the clock, this car needs to do me for a good 3 years

the price is actually 4100 the extra 400 is the warranty which im asking to be taken off

For what you're going to want it for, (cash release and low running costs, with reliability,) you could have done a lot worse.

WRT buying a house, if you've never done it before, remember this in the darkest hours having to deal with solicitors:

"When these couple of months are over, I'll have my own house."

Ours was a ball-ache to buy, but we're glad we did.
