Fast cars with reletively cheap insurance
Discussion
I'm 21 and looking to get a new car that's both fast and cheapish to insure. I have 2 years NCB, with a clean license and I've never crashed. I have looked at some hot hatches and fast saloons. I was surprised to find that insurance for a Golf GTi was more than for a C32 AMG, a 180mph car with 150bhp more! I'm tempted by the AMG, but servicing might suck my wallet dry... Are there any other options?
Looking for 0-60 around 5 - 6s, good mid range power, 5 seats, and economy at least in the 20s
Budget ideally around 7-8k for the car. Nothing M division though, insurance kills that route to fun...

Insurance is based on alot more that just 0-60 and BHP. You're looking at 'how many twunts managed to roll the car' etc. Golf GTIs are probably rolled more than C32's. Boy racer vs. Waft mobile.
You need to think outside the box and get something that is quick, but doesn't attract attention and isn't driven by other 22 year olds.
A Merc is probably a good bet for what you want. Maybe a 5-series. Saab, Lexus would probably be a good idea too.

I got my E92 BMW 335i M-sport last year at 21. I paid £820 for the insurance. This year with another 3 points to my name and a year older its gone up to £900 so not too bad really for the 306bhp and 5.2 secs to 60 time
I would like your job based on this and the role name
My Volvo is relatively f
k all to insure and that's rather brisk
and I'm only 18 !
XJR sounds a good idear I quite fancy one at some point.
C32 AMG would be a good laugh I take it you looking at the facelift V6 Supercharged examples for around 8k ?
Alpina B10 ?
Saab 9-5 Aero HOT's are pretty quick and even better with a little fettling.
Tried a B5 Audi S4 ? A mate had one when he was 20 (2 years ago) and he paid £960 for that fully comp with modifications.

Might be able to stretch to something like the VX220 now, might be a bit raggedy at that price but compared to the equivalent Elise the insurance is much cheaper and easily ticks the performance requirement and the economy.
Comfort, seating needs and some of the practicality might be missing, but really would you care that much?

Another vote for the MR2 turbo. Well within your price range for a minty mint one and you'll be shocked at how low insurance prices are on them. Probably the highest power to weight ratio car you'll be able to drive at 21 for reasonable costs.
Doesn't have 5 seats though. And a good push will see the economy fall below the 20's too.I recall exactly 4 years ago when I was selling my Mk4 Golf R32, I was offered a friends B5 Audi RS4 to replace it, I looked at insurance for the RS4 and it was almost HALF what I was paying for the R32 with the same company
I was 26 at the time with 5 years NCB and had a clean licence
From memory I was paying £790 ish for the R32 and the RS4 was £420
