I've run out of inspiration. My lovely Panda is going next Sunday so I need to buy a car tomorrow.

Budget, up to 4 grand. I'll be covering about 12,000 miles a year, while not exactly a huge distance, fuel economy is a concern. The car needs to be able to hold an unnecessarily large double buggy as we'll have two kids under 2 come January. I've looked at everything from a 3 door Citroën C4 to a Saab 9-5 estate, I haven't got my heart set on any make or model in particular although I'll hunt down and kill anyone who suggests a silver Focus.

Apart from those criteria, I'd like it to be within 30-ish miles of Edinburgh.

So, eBay, Autotrader or even a site called Pistonheads, if anyone could point me in the direction of a car I can love, I'll buy you an internet beer.

I've seen a few Sixes, all had alloys that looked like they were about to crumble into dust, not impressed with that.

Seen a VRS earlier today, liked it but was expensive for the age and miles, interior was very worn and the front bumper and bonnet had taken more shrapnel than Camp Bastion. Hard to get a nice one at 4 grand.

The Mondeo is always a decent option, I'm just not that interested. Perfectly decent cars, just don't float my boat.

That's the one I looked at this morning.

The same dealer had a nice Alfa 156 and Saab 9-3 for sale... I called this morning to check they were there before I drove 30 miles to see them. I got there and was told both had been sold yesterday. Not happy, that's not how you entice a potential customer through the door.

I've just shown this to the wife.

"NEARLY A HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES?? And isn't that rear-wheel drive?"

She's not a competent driver (learner) but I'd have that in a heartbeat.

Mazda's in general suffer very badly with alloy wheel paint corrosion, when I worked for Mazda our service department paid for our Christmas do one year by weighing in all the warranty claim alloys! A decent refurb and they'll be fine it's due to them not finishing them well as the Japanese roads don't get gritted or something from memor like that.

A quick look on PH classisfieds showed a MK1 VRS with about 68K on it for £2800 in Surrey but I'm sure good one's are about.

Because my aunt has a Lexus IS220 and "that was st in the snow." Therefore, rear-wheel drive is st in the snow and useless in Scotland and dangerous for inexperienced drivers. So now you know! wink

ah....so it's nothing to do with tyres at all then as rear wheel drive cars tend to have quite fat rear tyres. ok there's less weight over the driven wheels but winter tyres make a monumental difference.

RWD wouldn't put me off for fact that you get snow <10% of the year.

It may snow <10% of the year, but those of us who live in/near Edinburgh, last years snow lives long in the memory....

IIRC you'll get OK mpg on a cruise but, like mpg on everything, it'll nose dive if you enjoy yourself a bit too much.

Just a bread'n'butter family car, I know someone with one of these and he loves it.

I realise the last 2 examples posted by me have been, well, dull, but your criteria is quite strict therefore 4WD thirsty Jags have been passed over by me, in pursuit of common sense.
