Taxing a car.....How daft is this??

Ive just bought a £1000 runabout, a VX Astra which has a Disabled tax disc on it.
Same as any other tax disc only a £0.00 fee and disabled written on it.
The seller said I should change it and send him that one back.
I drove to the Post office with insurance, V5 slip, and MOT but was told I would have to go to nearest DVLA office and do it there as no post office could tax it with it saying "disabled" on the log book.
I said it is taxed till July 2012, but its disabled and I am not travelling a 60 mile round trip to tax a car. I was told thats the only way.
It was bad enough queing in the post office behind all the old duffers for 20 minutes to be told this.
Anyone any thoughts or experience of this?
I was going to wait and see if the new V5 in my name comes with instructions what to do.

this can only be done by your local DVLA office so sorry you WILL be going on that 60 mile trip if you want to use the car sorry.
Can't you download the forms and do it by post? Changed private plates etc in the past by post and its usually back within a week.Takes the aggro out of wasting half a day travelling then standing in a queue out the door and being grunted at by some old duffer behind a glass panel.And it'llcost a fraction of the price too.

That was exactly what we had to do when the company purchased an ex-NHS vehicle last year.The rules on taxing a car are utterly stupid and out of date. I think the last few cars I've bought weren't taxed, and it was probably a weekend when I bought them. I just couldn't be arsed to worry, so just got it insured and drove the cars home.
It's crazy you're actually trying to tow the line and give the Gov money, yet they put so many rules in place to stop you or make it difficult I can't be bothered to play their game.
They always win in the end of course, thanks to the fact you have to tax back to the start of the month.
So old fashioned compared to everything else. You can insure a car in minutes from a smart phone on the seller's driveway, but tax it? No way hose.

Aside from being a horrendous generalisation - the state of most cars going through Motability auctions would suggest you're WAY WAY wrong...I've no idea how cars can get this tatty - buik-sale fleet stock is minty by comparison...
The cars OK, clean and well kept, but its only an Astra and I cant get excited about it

Not free, you can take the car in exchange for your DLA. The tax, insurance, servicing, tyres etc. are free as part of the cost of the lease.I think the tatty ones are probably from the people who, maybe, shouldn't be receiving the DLA in the first place
Dad is considering getting one when him and mum retire. Has his own car at the moment but just likes the idea of no headaches

I rang the DVLA this afternoon and he told me to send off the green slip, MOT (doesn't need one), V10, V62 and a cheque.
He said in a week it'll be changed over taxed in its new class and I'll get my V5.
I hate the DVLA, without doubt the most difficult organisation to deal with.

I am making the trip tomorrow after work. I rang the DVLA and eventually spoke to a Robot with a Welsh accent, imagine how stupid that would be? 
He told me to go to Beverley with an MOT, insurance and a form V10, I said are you sure as I dont want to mess about, and he replied thats all I need.
I checked online and it said I need Insurance, MOT and a form V62!! so Ive no idea whos right.
I am taking both forms, getting it taxed and sticking a complaint in for them making the whole process so difficult and expensive.
I think disabled people should pay and claim it back like we have to everything else, then we wouldnt need a "Disabled" tax class on a vehicle so no need for any aggro, but then thats sensible and not made up by 1000 Welsh chimps sat in Swansea with no idea what a car is
