BMW 'Does a CLS' with the 6-series

BMW has finally revealed the production version of its new 6-series Gran Coupe, the CLS and A7-rivalling four-door that's set to hit Blighty in July 2012.

BMW has three engines available from launch - a 640i with a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six with 320hp and 332lb ft of torque, the 650i with a 450hp, 479lb ft turbocharged 4.4-litre V8, and the 640d, with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel that produces 315hp and 464lb ft.

And although the 650i is fairly rapid, with a 0-62mph sprint dealt with in 4.6secs, it's the 640d that's surely going to grab most attention, hitting 62mph from rest in 5.4secs and yet managing a combined fuel economy figure (and yes, we appreciate that's not the same as a real-world figure) of 50.4mpg.

And yes, a 560hp M6 version is on the way for the end of 2012 (woohoo!).

Up to the trailing edge of the A-pillar, the Gran Coupe is identical to the 6-series cabrio, but it gets a longer and flatter roof, substantial B-pillars (and a pair of rear doors that, like the front two are frameless).

Inside, BMW has used the extra length and height to provide seating for four adults. The rear bench also offers up a third three-point belt, a layout BMW cutely calls 'four plus one'.

The car will get its official public unveiling at Geneva in March, and is expected to cost around £2k more than its two-door equivalent.

Sorry dont like the styling on this 6 series! Dont like the front nose design and the panels behind the front wheel arches!

How come the video of the exterior is done at night time! Is it to hide the styling strange idea of video! But as usual BMW make dam good engines.

Doesn't look bad and infinitely better looking than a CLS banana.

I'm some what surprised to say I quite like that. boxedin

Rear end looks like an early 2000's Alfa but no bad thing.

In my defense I did look at a BMW 5 GT the other day and think "Hmm... It's growing on me and would suit my needs perfectly."

Maybe I'm coming down with something... nuts

Why didn't they stick to the original plans and make the BMW CS concept. Similar size and platform but looks waaaay better: more images

As a current E60 M5 owner I'm keen to see some specs on the M-model due out end of 2012 though.

Looks better that the 6-series Coupé and Cabrio. The longer roof line suits the front end better.

Oh I see, so the normal 6-Series is the coupe and the Gran Coupe is the four-door.

I don't 'get' it.

I like the rear end but the front end is hideous, as per normal 6er.

Does this fit in between the 5 series and the 7 series?

Does the range need that much diversity?

The rear end does not flow as well as the A7 and CLS. It looks like a saloon still and not so much a coupe. I'd take the merc.

I wouldn't like to be the bloke sitting in the middle of the rear seat bench, legs astride the console.

You can just see all the passengers shotgunning 'not the middle rear seat!' hehe
