I have seen for sale a private plate that interests me, its up on several sites all at slightly different prices.

Its not a cheap plate but how can i tell it belongs to the company that's selling it at the price i like? Is there anyway to check?

Many thanks

First check it's not on DVLA site as sometimes the alternative sources offer plates not yet purchased from DVLA at a sidge more than DVLA are charging (By smidge I mean anuything from £150 - £650)

Very easy - call and say "is this your plate or one you're selling on behalf of someone?"

Just apply to the company offering it at the cheapest price?

The details don't really matter.

doesn't really answer the question though does it, hardly an insignificant sum, i would like proof that i will get what i pay upfront for.

In this case you can ask the CNDA if the company you are dealing with is reputable.

I work in this industry and a lot of the number plates I sell are on behalf of third parties.

This quirk seems particular to the number plate industry.
I don't understand how a vendor can attempt to sell something they have no title to.
