Hi all,

Going to pick up a new car tomorrow, but as it has only just been registered, it has no tax on it and I am too young (20, need to be 21) for the 7 day free cover, so cannot use that policy to tax it. As I will be going in my current car to collect it I can't swap my current policy over now so the dealer can tax the car. There is still 11 months insurance left on my current policy too so starting a new 12 month policy isn't really an option.

Does anyone know any way round this? Can I insure my dad through a one day policy and forward the certificate onto the dealer so he can tax it?

Or do it the other way round?

If you are trading your old car in, get a day policy on your old car and have your Dad drive there, then use the policy on the new car to tax it.

Ring your insurer and explain the situation, they should add your new car on to your current policy as an additional car for the day. Then you can drive your old car in, new car out whilst being fully insured. Expect to pay an admin charge for the privilege smile

Speak to your existing insurers. They should be able to transfer the cover to your new car with some overlap.

Just phone your insurance company & tell them you need to swap the car your insured for to the new one. They may charge you an admin fee & obviously there may be an increase in your premium. You wouldnt have to do it on the day, just say from x date, swap it. Then hopefully the garage can tax the new car.

If you still need to be insured on both the new & old car at the same time, they may just add your old car to the new cars policy. Back when I was 20 / 21 (a few years ago), I bought my new car and swapped my policy over as above. Then, Norwich Union who I was with at the time, added my old car to the policy at extra cost until I sold it privatly 6 weeks later. I did have to pay extra to do this.
