Right...

Ive found a car Im happy to live with for the next few years .. a Clio 172 Cup, road going but will fit in with my plans of starting out in autosolos and 12 car events and then progressing etc.

Basically, its not in the best of condition, all but the roof and bonnet have been resprayed (not very well at all), needs tax, 2 tyres, fixed imobaliser probelm (which i think may return in th enear future) no radio, the fuse box has been 'abused' to say the least and probably rear disks and pads.

I wanted some advice as to whether its a good idea to by a car which the bloke selling it couldnt say why it was resprayed, and was all in all full of bullsh*t.

Its a bargain price naturally, just wanted some level headed advice on what you would do. Initially I walked away but now Im thinking if Im going to 'rough' it up in events then I'll probably have to get it resprayed at some point

Cheers :-)

if it's cheap, you can do the work yourself, and you're gonna abuse it on track........ fk it why not.

That's just my POV any ways.

Better than tracking and possibly stuffing a minter aint it?

The stuff thats knackered, would only end up getting replaced with high performence stuff anyways wouldnt it?

Depends how much it is. I wouldn't buy it if it was more than £300 with those problems and no explaination for the respray.

If it's cheap enough to throw away if things go the way of the pear then go for it! If all else fails just bang it on ebay with no reserve and you'll probably get your money back.

There's no way the 172 will be £300, however poor. It's over a grand, surely?
Christ, how much would you pay for the 'explaination' alone?

laugh

Depends how much more it is than other clios. Clio 172s are quite cheap now. Looking on eBay / pistonheads, quite a few start around £1500.

I spend my days working on a PC running auto generating reports.

This place is all that's stopped me from any of the following:

a) a sizeable smoking addiction
b) top myself
c) take out the whole of the office with a rusty spoon and some outdated humour

The immobiliser problem could be stopper though. If it won't go it's nearly worthless.
What sort of problem is it? Built in immobiliser or some after market one that needs binnig?

I know a lot of early Meganes and Lagunas being off the road for months with these issues, is this the similar era?

He said I could have it for £1,200, the tax ran out in Jan 11 which makes me think they bought it in as an unrecorded smash and have been repairing it ever since. The place selling it is a garage and spray shop, they did the MOT last week but from my keen eagle eye I no for a fact the disks wouldnt of got through along with low tyre depth.

The imobaliser isnt causing problems at the moment - its some thing they fixed but IMHO i reackon it was a bodge at best!

For some reason they have now removed it from ebay, half an hour after I went to see it, makes me wonder why!? (I doubt they sold it in the time I only drove 20 miles home!)

Trust your instincts and leave well alone!

I was looking for a small, cheapo winter car a couple of months ago and there were one or two which seemed OK but either the vendor just didn't seem quite right or the car had issues which were undeclared in the ads. In the end, I didn't buy anything. Maybe next year when I can move up a price bracket or two?

Wow, a potentially 12 year old clio with a 2 litre engine, stiffer springs and dampers, and some different suspension geometry tarted up with some added extras. Gee, must be worth thousands of pounds if pistonheads say it is.

The asking price was over a grand, £1200 in fact. As I said, you don't pick a complete one up, in any condition for £300.
