Wingmirrors.... 0_o

Hey all, I'm a bit new here so I hope i'm writing on the right forum!

Basically, I've been looking for some people who know cars....

Yesterday evening I clipped a guy's wingmirror in my car (apparently). It didn't do any damage to my wing mirror at all in fact, not even a scuff mark. I didn't notice anything, but this guy decided to go a bit psycho and follow me home. After trying to get into my moving car (seriously not cool), i stopped at the next place i could and asked what the problem was. He accused me of hitting his wing mirror. When he went to his wing mirror he literally rattled the thing, it moved up, down and away from his car.

Now...given i didn't feel or hear anything, there was no marks on my own wingmirror, no damage to the housing or anything and it wasn't bent back in is it possible I did that extent of damage to it? I thought that wingmirrors were designed to pop out of the housing before breaking? and surely had i hit it with that force my own mirror would have bent back in? or even shown signs that it hit something?

Anyway, there is a police case with this guy now (r.e. the harrassment) and I just wanted a knowledgeable opinion on whether that damage COULD have been me before I go in to the police to give my statement. When I first made my complaint I said that i may have hit him, I simply don't know....but, what do you guys think? I mean, I assume i must have hit him, surely people don't just go postal for nothing, but could it have been that extent? and what would the insurance repercussions be? because I would query replacing that mirror if it had already been damaged (which is my most current theory).

Did you have music on when you were driving? When you something hits your wing mirror it's loud.

I had music on, but not loud....

And what's it to be? well i'd prefer to say i didn't touch him, but why would he have followed me and abused me otherwise? I mean, I assume he's a bit off balance, but it's rare that someone would just pick a random stranger to harrass like that. What I need to know is could I have pulled his wing mirror out of it's housing without noticing?? because, I don't think that's possible...

I was going to say the same thing. You'd know if you had hit it or not as they make quite a surprising bang when you hit them.

Unless he has witnesses supporting what he said I'd just tell him where to go. Driving to your home and letting him know where you live may have been a bit of a mistake though. If he's that sort of guy he may come back with the intention of damaging your property if you refuse to admit you did it.

Maybe it was previosuly damaged and you got close enough that he thought you wouldn't know wehether you had hit it or not if challanged.

sounds to me that someone broke their mirror, and is now trying to claim on you, hoping you'll roll over and accept it.

it should be fairly obvious what to tell the insurance/police

My wife had similar when someone chased her complaining she'd hit him. No mark on her car and he never followed it up. Some people are odd.

Wing mirrors make a hell of a noise, and I doubt you'd have missed it.

That's exactly what I thought, I'm fairly small and female, so I think he just saw a good opportunity to get some cash off of me :S

I didn't hear anything though - so thank you guys, that's what I thought but I just needed to know for my own peace of mind really.

Luckily I lost him at the village just before my home....I had the police on the phone so, I just hope he doesn't trawl through the village till he finds me...

He had another guy in the car with him that's kind of what was even more intimidating to be honest, so he'll have corroboration, but will they accept it if it's from someone he was travelling with? :S

seems like complaining guy's a bit of a loon --- I clipped someone's door mirror once, I certainly did notice & there was physical evidence -- my mirror glass smashed -- been clipped by others a fair few times leaving scratches/cracked mirror housing ---- there are some loons who will threaten you if you touch their car with your hand, get close, cut them up, look at them the wrong way -- perhaps he was on something?

I did thankfully yeah, I was on the phone to the police as it was happening....apparently he called the police when he noticed i was on the phone to "report" the incident. The police were trying to get him to stop following me but he refused.

So they have his number plate and phone number, brilliant. They won't be interested in the supposed clash of mirrors but will want to have words about his harassing you.

Hmm, 2 guys following you in a car claiming you caused damage and getting you to stop?
Maybe they were car jackers trying to get you out of the car??
