A friend told me last night that he had a private plate on retention 5 years ago but never kept up the payment. Is it possible to get this back after such a long time?

I got mine back after 3 years. Had to write a letter but was surprisingly simple.

Cheers. Did you have to pay back dated fees?

Yes it is, write to the DVLA with a covering letter and the certificate, you'll need to pay the retention fee for the period of time that has passed and the current year at £25 a year, you can also advise of change of address at the same time if applicable and they'll send you the certificate back updated.

I did it a while back when I had lost a certificate, and then found it in a pile of paper !

Took my car to Guernsey and messed up the paperwork to retain my private plate.
Moved back 3 years later and DVLA were brilliant I asked if the car could be put back onto its original plates and they did.
This was the Bournemouth DVLA office. Was quiet and the staff came out from behind their glass screen and talked with you going through everything. Unlike the Chelmsford DVLA office where I have waited over 2 hours on a staircase to be told I had filled out the wrong form and I would need to go away and fill in the correct one!

Indeed but not too bad, dmcrobin has explained already though!

I was pleased to get it back, good luck.

I'm not sure he has the certificate, just the log book, will try anyway. Cheers

can you get a certificate for an expired reg if you lost it?

If he has the log book then its not on retention, its on a car.

If it is on retention but he doesn't have the certificate, just explain that in the letter and it should be fine.
