I am still casting my net around for a new motor and just had one or two questions about the above vehicle. Silly basic questions but still valid in my opinion......

Is the 2.0 diesel engine the same as in the Mondeo? Or is it sourced from elsewhere?

Is the 2wd variant FWD or RWD?

Thanks.

I tried the 2.0 diesel a while back and in some ways it suited the car more than the 2.5. It was quiet, torguey and could easily overtake without dropping a gear while the 2.5 needed revving. Even away from roundabouts you could feel it was FWD as the inside front wheel would scrabble slightly.

I've not driven the 2.1V6, my father had one as a courtesy car while his XJ was serviced and didn't like it one bit as it felt cheap and kept changing gear. But that is the verdict of somebody who had just stepped out of a V8...

The 3.0 is the best but so thirsty you may as well get the XJ.

Low 20s in town, high 30s on a sensible run, low to mid 30s being a bit spirited.

Very happy with mine.

That's a lot better than I was expecting.

Must admit to being impressed with it. I used to do well out of my E34 540i too.

I drive using a lot of forward planing and a reasonably light foot. That's not to say I'm slow, I make progress suitably but smoothly. Rarely is the loud pedal buried in the floor, it just doesn't need it smile But it will touch 70mph in 2nd (I just had the urge to find out) biggrin

In which case the 3.0 is definitely on my list of cars to consider as that extra 500cc really makes a big difference. I think I'd go for the estate, more useful and (I think) looks just as good for a few hundred more.

My parents have just bought a 2.2D X Type (father is a keen driver), and they are chuffed with it.

My mother used to have the 2.5 V6 4WD, we used it as a tow car for the caterham and it coped fine. Plenty of torque and had a nice growl when it was revved.

Poor mgp, not really a Jag, so don't get too worked up about the brand unless you have a Mrs Bucket type mentality, and potential problems with the transfer box, on the AWD versions. But cheap to buy.

As you mention cheap to buy. In fact even compared with high spec Mondeos they're not bad value at all.

Its basically an up market mondeo. So you get the refinement of the mondeo with the 4WD stability and growling V6 and much nicer interiors. Great car imo

I think that the 2.2D is the one to go for. The 2.5 is the one to avoid.

My dad has a 3.0 Sport and has had it approx 6 years.
It was a very low milage example and is still immaculate.
Quite thirsty, especially compared to the equivelent sized engined BMW but it does have the advantage of 4WD.
He had the dreaded transfer box problem, which required a new propshaft and an ABS sensor but everything else has been servicable items.
Cheap to buy, nice to drive, 4WD and if you can live with mid 20s economy worth a look.
Cant comment on the FWD diesels as never driven them.

If you're a keen driver looking for a basic diesel X-Type I'd strongly advise trying a Mondeo first. The Jag might be a nicer place to be, but I drove the two back to back when they were new and I was quite surprised by how much better the Ford was to drive.

ETA Just to clarify that, OP, they are based on the same platform, I'm not just a Ford fanboy! smile

^^^^ This X 1,000

My wife had a Mondeo 130, years ago and I actually enjoyed driving it BUT we got rid as I couldn't stand the awful plastics inside.

Then had an A6 which was a great car, then bought an X type as you get the nice interior with the sporty Mondeo drive - WRONG.

How could Jag screw it up so badly - it doesn't go, there is no torque, it doesn't steer nor handle anything like as well as the Mondeo.

I thought there was something wrong with our X type but talking to the specialists - nope they are just crap.
