Just a theory I will be testing this week. It will apply to roundabouts mainly, if I am going around with no indicators on then people approaching will be wary and not pull out in front of me. If I have them on then they think "I can get out in front of him" but I am usually travelling a bit quicker than the "average" person, so they usually end up with me almost side swiping them.

ETA I will be using a Transit van for the purposes of this experiment

To the ones who are likely to pull out - why will it make a difference if you're indicating or not ?

I think that anyone going round a roundabout without indicating is a tt, especially when it's done deliberately.

Nothing personal OP, just one of my pet hates. My Dad does exactly this and when questioned he doesn't see why he's causing an inconvenience or how he's making congestion worse.

If people indicated properly then traffic could move more freely. Of course, people should be more courteous on roundabouts as well (so I can understand your argument, if I don't agree).

Indicate left immediately after passing the previous exit.

AIUI, you indicate when exiting the roundabout?

My theory is if they see you indicating then they "think" they can get out in front of you. If you aren't then they are wary and don't. smile

And you use the left hand lane for every exit!

The only thing an indicator tells you with 100% certainty is the car has an orange flashy light on the side

To take any further meaning from the orange flashy light is the actions of a fool

Eh ???

If I think I can get out in front of you I will. If I don't I won't. The indicator is irrelevant in that respect.

Why did you put a flamesuit on? You're right. 75% of people have no fking clue how to indicate at a roundabout, all most of them do is simply show you that their right indicator works as they merrily move left and exit, leaving you sitting waiting for no cars to go past.

What I wouldn't give for a roof-mounted 50 cal machine gun sometimes.

It tells me that at some point the guy behind the wheel has moved the indicator stalk. It probably means that he wants to convey information he feels would be relevant and useful to those around him.

Its not the be-all and end-all but its a useful piece of information in everyday driving. smile

And especially on fking roundabouts furious

Agree,

The only time i really indicate is when turning off a road, and to let the car behind know im about to brake.

The rest of the time they just tend to confuse people.

So basically, you're going to drive like a bit of a dick, in the hopes that people will see that you're driving like a bit of a dick, and in turn will give you the space that they'd usually give a bit of a dick?

Have fun.

Id indicate 'round' a roundabout in an HGV, but only because I will always be in the furthest to the left lane that I can be for my planned exit and indicating prevents people from driving out underneath me having presumed that Im exiting the roundabout on the road that theyre leaving.

In a car you should only indicate to actually leave the roundabout, Shirley?

So you don't indicate at roundabouts? Please do so.

No offence, but people like you are why this thread exists. If you're coming up to a standard 4 exit roundabout, and you want to take the 3rd exit, so, turning right, you won't bother indicating right, you'll just indicate left as you want to leave?
I've seen a lot of this at one particular roundabout on my commute to work, irritating to say the least.

Indicating or not does not bother me, road positioning really annoys me!

The people that turn a roundabout into a square, making sharp turns at every exit.

9 Times out of 10 you can tell where people are going, but some people look like they have no idea themselves.
