Anyone own/had one?

Seem to be a few decent examples around for low prices (2002-2003 models) without mega miles on - not terrible on insurance either compared with some "hot" hatches (didn't know there was an estate version either - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011... )

Are they actually any good? Always liked the MK1 Focus.

Yes they are good.

Not as fast as some competitors.

Will probably not feel as sharp as they once did.

Very thirsty for the performance, if you can live with the MPG of a focus you could have a 6 cylinder 3 series or for not much more fuel an 8 cylinder barge.

There is a good thread on the front page of the Ford forum called "ST170 - the forgotten hot hatch?". Read that.

Not especially quick, or frugal, but a good drive and well specced.

Just be aware that there are many a dog about now amongst the good ones.
