Taken from the Telegraph:

- UK is Europe's fourth largest car producer, representing 3 per cent of total GDP

- Typical UK automotive turnover £50 billion pa

- Typical net value-added to the economy over £8.5 billion

- Employs 700,000 people

- Accounts for more than 10 per cent of UK exports

- Invests more than £1 billion annually in R&D

- Seven volume car manufacturers, six commercial vehicle manufacturers, 11 bus and coach manufacturers, 10 niche/specialist manufacturers, eight Formula One teams

- More than one million vehicles and two million engines produced annually.

- Manufacturing levels set to grow to pre-recession levels by 2014.

- 75 per cent of vehicles exported

- 2,350 automotive supply firms, employing 82,000

- Supply chain generates £4.5-£5 billion of added value annually.

Acknowledging that most of the companies are foreigned owned, I don't think things look too bad at present.
The number employed in the industry surprised me.
I think the impending Eurozone collapse could cause some problems though which is a little concerning.

Surprised 8 Formula 1 teams don't invest more than £1billion annually in R&D?

Agreed. But maybe these fall into some sort of engineering or technology tab rather than 'automotive'

Trying to name all of these is proving a bit of a struggle.

Volume car builders, I guess Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Vauxhall but who are the others? Ford & Peugeot both stopped building in the UK didn't they?
Commercials - Ford vans, DAF (ex Leyland) trucks, Vauxhall vans, maybe Iveco?
ETA - Whoever builds taxis maybe?
Buses - can't think of much other than Alexander/Dennis. Volvo's Irvine plant closed a while ago. I guess there's probably some other body builders like Wrights etc in Northern Ireland.
F1 teams - Red Bull, McLaren, Williams, Force India - others?

The other volume car-builders will be Jaguar and Land-Rover, and possibly Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, MINI and Lotus. I'm not sure how big or small you have to be before you become 'niche/specialist' - are we talking Morgan/Ginetta/Caterham size here, or Radical/Westfield?

The other four F1 teams - Caterham, Lotus-Renault, Virgin/Marussia and possibly another manufacturer that supplies all the others - Cosworth, possibly?

Ford's Dagehnam plant is their worldwide centre for four pot diesels. They also make/body Transits in Southampton.

BMW might need to be on their list for hams hall engines and probably for Swindon pressings too.

Yep, Brackley.

Mercedes High Performance Engines (ie F1 engines) are in Northampton.

Zytec make the Mercedes KERS.

There are loads of UK based F1/motorsports suppliers, not including spec bits that are made in the UK (eg. the common ECU is Mclaren Electronics).

Not surprising considering the lengths the Govt will go to to make new cars sell (scrappage scheme & tighter and tighter MOT rules)

It's easier to list the F1 teams that aren't UK based:
Ferrari - Maranello, Italy
STR - Faenza, Italy
Sauber - Hinwil, Switzerland
HRT - Debatable! Somewhere in Spain, or so the story goes.

UK teams:
Red Bull - Milton Keynes
McLaren - Woking
Williams - Grove
Mercedes - Brackley
Force India - Silverstone
Renault (Lotus as of 2012) - Enstone
Lotus (Caterham as of 2012) - Hingham, Deepest, Darkest Norfolk
Virgin (Marussia as of 2012) - Rotherham. Moving to Silverstone, or so the story goes.
