Having just put the phone down to an Ambulance Chasing company (nice lad from India asking if I wanted to raise a claim for compensation for an accident where I was rear ended a few months ago). Having politely declined his insistance that it would be good for me (financially), I got wondering, where do they get the leads from? Now as the Police were not involved, I can only assume that it comes from the Insurance Companies themselves.

If that is the case, there surely must be some legislation that compels Insurance Companies to share this data?

So, does anyone know how this information is obtained?

Read small print of insurance and whatever tick boxed you ticked on signing up for it.

You probably agreed for them to share it with someone or the other.

There was also an article where the police were selling these details to make some money for their department.

As a vehicle recovery agent, we used to get contacted all the time by management companys. The referal fees usually worked out about £500 a time if the case was taken up. We must've been one of the few with scruples though. Never passed on any information to them.

No reason why ambulance chasers would not join the party.

It's not just your own insurance company, but also any time you use an insurance comparison website. Make sure you tick/untick any box that refer to 'carefully selected 3rd parties/partners/agents'.

I fastidiously check that I'm not giving my permission for any of this data sharing, but and I still get the calls/emails.

After the 5th one in about a week I told the 6th to hold for a minute, and when I picked it up 20 minutes later he was gone.

Two hospitals in the North West were also in trouble for passing on patients details to PI lawyers.

Many referrals come via Claims Management Companies too. And you garage. And Salvage Company...

I had a call from one of these companies yesterday, would have started a thread, but am still in shock at the rubbish they tried on to get me to file a claim.

Firstly, accident happened September 2009, so not recent, they did not have details of the vehicle I was in, they tried telling me I was driving a vehicle I did not buy for another 3 months.

Secondly, they seemed to believe that I was the driver, I wasn't I was the passenger.

Anyway, as I was vaguegly interested in hearing what they had to say as about 9 months ago I told another one exactly where to go and if they contacted me again I would look to report them to the police for harrasment, we cleared up their incorrect information.

So, having got everything sorted, apparently "it is now the law that if you have a no fault accident, and the overall insurance claim is greater than £1000.00, you are entitled to compensation just for a few aches and pains, and the government says this, so its all ok and above board mate".

WTF

Obviously told them in no uncertain terms where to go, even though a few grand for "a few aches & pains" would be very helpful right now.

This happened to me a few years ago, got shunted on the way to work. Very minor damage bumper displaced and broken rear lights, I called in at the Land-Rover dealer to get some rear light lenses to replace the damaged ones and arrange repair to the bumper. Before I had reached work had a phone call from a local firm of solicitors asking if I wanted to pursue a claim. Apart from the Land-Rover dealer, the only people who knew about it was the chap who ran into me and me. They kept calling me on and off for the next few months, despite being asked not to.
What really gets me is that someone out there is now linking databases up, except that 1 + 1 is quite clearly not equalling 2.

The number they contatced me on was my other halfs business number (it was her van we were in when the accident occurred), but they were refering to my pick up that I bought at a later date. Although she was insured to drive the pick up, the insurer & broker never had her telephone number.

I was snowboarding in Fernie last year, and the yellow pages at the public telephones all had full page adverts on the back cover for ambulance chasers, with little cards left beside the phones also.

I know that's unrelated, but really, nothing surprises me with that lot.

Boils the piss, really does.

Since we are on the referral fee thing...

Got yourself injured at work ? Contact your union. They refer you to a specialist lawyer.....want to know how much money YOUR union (that YOU pay money to) pockets from giving YOUR name to the capitalist running dog lawyer ?

No....of course you don't. That would be too close to home, eh Jack.
