The Audi TT "image"
Discussion
Soon I'll be looking for a car with a bit more horsepower than the 1.6 civic I currently drive. The type R is an obvious choice, however as a 21 year old male insurance premiums are extortionate. I've come across the old style Audi TT 1.8 (225 bhp version). Despite the power, with 1.8l displacement the insurance is comparatively reasonable.
I've never attached too much significance to 'image' and clearly there are more important considerations at stake. Nevertheless in the words of my girlfriend 'I know very little about cars and I know Audi TTs are for hairdressers'. I'm not encouraged.
I'm interested in hearing what other people think:
Is 'image' an important factor for you?
Is this the 'image' of the Audi TT?
Cheers

Who gives a s
t what other people think of the car.
Here I my list of things I worry about when buying a car (in no particular order):
1. Do I think it is a good car?
2. Do I like the car?
3. Do I want the car?
4. Do I enjoy driving that car/that type of car?
Do you see where I'm headed with this?
At no point does 'hmmm, I wonder whether Dave, from down the pub will call me a hairdresser for driving this'.
Who gives a s
t - if the car ticks your boxes and you like it...get it bought!

Public Transport
Standing in front of Public Transport
Failing that grow a pair and buy what you want to, it's your money being spent not mine or Jim from work so our opinions are worthless to you.

I think they are great cars. No, they won't set the world on fire and they aren't the same drivers fine tuned machine as a caterham. But, on a nice day you can go for a thrash and have fun, on a horrible cold day, heated seats on and relax in the fantastic interior.
Great all round cars, boot can fit 2 mountain bikes in too...

Just to reiterate others on here, buy the car because you like it. Personally i think the TT looks great and on a brief (5 minute) test drive i quite enjoyed the performance.
I have always had hairdressers cars ( mr2 mk1, smart roadster and currently own a mini cooper s clubman and mx5) and it doesn't bother me one bit.
The reason i didnt buy the TT was the child seat didnt fit well on the back seats. (just to prove my heterosexuality!!)

Exactly, I think the first TT was a great looking car, much better looking than the second. I love all this snobbery about Mk 4 golf underpinnings too, few cars these days have a unique chassis. I'd love one.

In answer to your questions, coming from the point of view of a 22 year old, I would have to say image is pretty massive for me.
Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead in a TT, either shape. If i see a bloke driving one, it's one of those moments when I instantly think, 'Nob'
