I started off my driving "career" sharing a '99 mercedes e200 with my dad, then it was mine, now we are thinking of sharing a car again, it just makes sense really, anyway the car in question as insurance wasnt too much of an issue is an x53 X5(the first style)
We were looking earlier at the v8's and found a 4.8is and was very tempted, is this going to molest my wallet with bills?

I'm tempted with a lovely little 4.4 V8 X5 at the moment - just a shade under 5 grand - so bloody tempted hehe

Probably, especially petrol, but not unduly if you find a good one and have a good BMW indy!

Clearly parts won't be cheap, but not unduly pricey either, reliability should be OK, make sure the tranny oil has been changed, and the shifts are smooth with no delays. Probably worst time of year to buy one! But if you want one, go for it!

They'll be expensive for fuel, if you are using it daily round towns it'll cost a bit.

Moose- thats what drew me in, the girlfriend is due to pop next week and wants sprog to be safe! Also mum doesnt like normal cars, too many accidents i think, but anyway, mpg or insurance doesnt really matter too much, ive already got a half decent quote, just worried about the bills, a nice decently specced one is cheap and there are lots about! I dont mind exact litre i just want a v8.

To be honest, if I had a family, there is no way they would drive around in anything but a reasonably modern 4x4 to be honest with you. It is something I would insist on.

If mpg/insurance doesn't matter, then I would say as long as it's been reasonably maintained, get it bought!

I'm trying to buy one...and trying not to buy one rofl

Make sure you get some quotes on tyres before you buy. IIRC the X5 my Mrs looked at had 20's and was around £450 a corner!

I thought he meant was he bonkers for sharing with his dad?

I share all my 2nd cars with the old man. Half the costs to look after it and rarely do we both have the time to want to drive them at the same time.

It sounds more like you're fronting to me but what the hell, everybody does it....

fun/sports/classic/weekend car, yes why not.

Daily 4x4 hack?

Not sure, but as a family man I wondered why you have come to this conclusion?

From what I've seen, 4x4s tend to come off better than a normal hatch/saloon in accidents. Obviously this isn't always the case and there'll be someone who'll pop up with their aunt's boyfriend's son's girlfriend had an accident in a hatch vs 4x4 and came off better. Also, with a 4x4, there is less chance of your bonnet going under the front/back of a car if you were to hit it.

For those reasons, I would rather my family drive around in a 4x4. The reasonably modern bit is because the safety in those are better than the older cars!!

Obviously you could take this to extremes and drive around in artics/tractors, but having them in 4x4 is a reasonable thing.

Not fronting, thats illegal! I would rather have no car than break the law to be fair, i understand about the tyres, also it wasnt me who said about the family thing, it was the OH, just thought a v8 would help ease the pain of not having a quick car!

Gotta love the car size arms race.

You could always make sure they are good drivers instead.
