Whenever I look at Japanese sporty stuff there seems to be a theme that emerges,

A lot seem to get adorned with all manner of tat, look at Supra's and I would say 50 percent have been ruined with a massive bodykit (usually Vileside), lairy paint, graphics, Lexus Lights and big chrome wheels, potentially a show winning "ICE install (Cost 12K) with four 15 inch subs which is powerful enough to turn your internal organs to mush, it incorporates enough MDF, Plywood and fibreglass to make a Caravan and renders the rear seats unusable. Also, the stanced thing has crept in, I dont really want, being an old fart a car with no suspension and tyres that dont face the road.

RX7's seem to cop for it as well and every 200 SX that is left has been hit with the drift thing and is all rivets, tie wraps and Duck tape. 300 ZX's have aquired a reall chest wig image but when you see a standard one they are actually a fairly unassuming, decent looking coupe, saw one next to an Audi A5 the other day and it looked positively modest.

You then finally find one that doesnt look like something your five year old son would by from Toys R Us that has a button to make it play some tinny rap music or do screeching tyre noises with his Christmas money, you then see its a either a poxy N/A version, an Auto (I know some prefer autos) or both, you find a decent looking, recent model, in the right colour and perhaps sensibly modified and its fifteen grand !

Then there are those that look ok but have a claimed 600 - 1000 bhp using a turbo off an ocean liner, now, call me an old sceptic but one huge turbo where they used to be two smaller ones aint going to make it nicer to drive is it, faster, yes, definitely but I get the impression that its nothing, nothing, nothing, hyperspace, hedge. Now, dont get me wrong, I like the idea but realistically for a daily drive its probably overkill and done on the cheap will probably explode or I would crash it.

MX'5 seem to escape as they don't attract the Vin Diesel wanabes's as readily but the odd one does stray into MX5 ownership and puts 17 inch alloys on and big stripes.

It's kind of the point of Japanese cars though, they're a blank canvas. I think the problem is more that people don't quite get what they do domestically and end up doing things with no taste and on the cheap.

300zx's suffer from this most of all, they're cheap to buy anyway, so most owners down't have a huge budget to modify them with, combined with the fact most tuners stopped making any new parts for them at least 10 years ago and they all look dated and and pretty terrible.

Properly set up single turbos are very good. Okay, maybe not the same power delivery as a twin, but more power when needed in the right rev range, different driving style.

This is starting to get worse, with many 'stanced' cars and other such stuff ruined.

Coincidently, I'm looking for a new car to replace the '5 with. Can't seem to settle on what turbo'ed jap monster I want. So will probably end up uprating the 5 and whacking a turbo on it..

LOL

I have to admit chasing power figure with turbo cars has never been my thing for the above reasoning

I quite like that as well, perhaps it can be abbreviated, one less nothing and turn it into "NNHH" and use it as an acronym to confuse newcomers, like the Whoosh Parrot and Red Bull thing ?

the exact reason the 200SX was sold. (Barring it crippling me financially)

A well set up Supra can be far better with a big single, even low down in the power range. My 1JZ makes boost at 1800 rpm & has 300bhp at 3600rpm, laggy it is'nt, its a big turbo with the right size exhaust housing.

However I agree on the whole, there is an awful lot of tat out there, Veilside gash bodykits being the worst culprits.

Personally I like street sleepers biggrin though its now a trailer queen these days

like that but it isnt a sleeper, slightly sleepy but it doesnt exactly blend in !

And the big singles, was thinking more in terms of the mega powered Supra's with 600 bhp but can see how a well set up one would be great.
