So on Tuesday lunch time I left the office in north Germany and headed for Hoek van Holand for the night ferry.
I'm in a TVR Chimaera that I bought in September. Clutch is slipping, diff needs looking at so I've been nursing it until it gets to the garage in January.
So it's raining, snowing, freezing etc so not TVR weather so I take my time and the normal 5 hour 350 miles takes me 7.5 hours. Feeling tired, can't wait for a beer and get to sleep in my cabin.
Pull into the terminal, pull over to the side to get my papers out,
........passport........ frown
Left it in my jacket pocket back in Germany.
So at 8:00 pm I'm turned round and heading back to Germany.
Good was temps gone up so managed to do 4 hours 45 back.
So 1:00am to bed totally knackered.
Funny thing was on Wednesday I get up to repeat the drive and still find myself looking forward to a nice long drive in the TVR.
Still, what dummy I am and about 200 euroes lighter in petrol money.

I'm a rounder dummy than that.
Must admit that I did enjoy the second days drive. Better weather and started to appreciate what a good car it is. Needs a bit of tlc but will be a cracking car by next year.

Last 2 years I've gone on holiday, last 2 years I've also realised I've left my passport at my work flat 6 hours away.

Last year was bad enough stood in the que at M&S with the wife on the Saturday to get some currency then saw the sign saying you need a passport. I actually said the words I'll come back with it tomorrow (we flew on the Monday). Goes home wakes up sunday, breakfast, showered, only then when I 'went' to get my passport did the penny drop.

Follow up this year exact same thing. Was 2 days before we flew though and luckily a very good mate met me halfway.

So no....you ain't alone lol

Suppose can happen to most of us. At least you'll learn from this experience hehe
Not that I'd complain about cruising in a TVR.

Bwa - ha - haa, unlucky!

Similar one - I live on the South Coast, but have a holiday cottage on the North Norfolk coast - about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive depending on traffic and daylight, around 200 miles.

Me and my girlfriend were driving up to the cottage one Friday night, and for whatever reason, when we were nearly there she said 'ha ha, imagine if you'd forgotten to bring the keys to the cottage, that would be a nightmare...'

I'll let you guess what was still hanging on the hook 175 miles behind us.

Strangely enough, I didn't mind the drive back South and then back to the cottage, taking in total nearly 7 hours, cos I was in my Porsche 911.

And by the time I set off AGAIN, she was asleep and it was midnight, so clear roads meant some good hoonage driving

Ha! Reminds me of a trip from our hotel in Ibiza to the airport, early hours of the morning. 20 odd years ago, me and 2 mates. Been out round San Antonio all night, pissed beyond help. Managed to crawl back to the hotel and board the bus back to the airport which was an hours drive. Half way there, I turned to my mate laughing and saying I was 'so pissed, I don't even know if I've got my passport'

Cue the sudden realisation that, indeed, I didn't have my passport. S.H.I.T !!

Nearly got lynched by the whole bus as I sheepishly asked the driver to turn back so I could get it from the hotel locker. But, he did, I got it and we got back to the airport in time.

Close call!! biggrin

Ha ha some great admissions helping me out. Thanks for sharing.
One more was from last year.
I was in Kingston Canada and had to do a 3 hour drive with a collegue back to Montreal to catch a flight.
Yes, same again, left my passport in the Kingston hotel.
Cost me 300 dollars to change the flights to the next day.
Up side was a great night in Kingston when we got back (at my cost).

My mate did the very same thing. We got a call from the cleaner of the 'Dorint am Nurburgring' saying we have found your passport. We were about 50 miles from dunkerque.

Que, me driving back like an absolute bellend to get it. We pulled up to the reception, with someone waiting there to give it back, and back off we went only stopping for fuel. I slept well from dover onwards put it that way!!

I was leaving an island resort in Fiji by boat when I remembered I left my passport with my coat in the reception area. Being young, not the fat bloater I am now and sporting a genuine goatee at that time, I jumped off the boat and swam/waded back ashore to retrieve it.

It was only about 5 feet deep of water near to the beach we were landed on, so it's not as macho as it sounds. But it was a memorable lesson in looking after one's passport and in looking like a prick in front of 50 boat passengers.

I've done the holland-germany trip many times. Did you find the first hour or so of the drive from holland to be horribly confusing?

I've done England to Greece and realised I didn't have my v5 , luckily showing a folder full of receipts and other stuff baffled foreign border controls. I had it FedEx to Athens
