As a young lad, I had a soft spot for the old VW Beetle, mostly thanks to dad buying the Herbie films on video (yes, that long ago!) and bringing them home for me one night. Now, at age 21, I want one of my own. But while the classic Beetle is actually a nice prospect (despite what the TG boys say) and in all probability I would buy a cream one and put Herbie stripes and a number 53 on it, in reality it's probably not the greatest idea; with me living in Aberdeen and according to my dad, the 'heater' on them was beyond ste.

So, I find myself looking at the New Beetle. Not the just announced version you understand, there's no way I can afford one till I've graduated, then maybe we'll see. Ones from 2000-2003 seem to be reasonably priced (i.e. comparable with what I sold the Panda for), and there's something about them that makes me want one. But there's a nagging voice in my head that they might look a little gay.

What does PH think?

Sorry mate... Julian Clarey wouldn't touch one on the basis its too gay. So in true PH fashion my advice is MTFU, buy something that will probably kill you in a ball of flames and go kick a girls back doors in

I don't think it's 'gay' to like the new Beetle. But there's no denying it's a bit of a girly car.

Who cares. If you're insecure to the point it bothers you, don't buy one. If you aren't, buy one.

The MX5 is the de rigueur suggestion to most car questions on here, yet you'll still no doubt get plenty of folk telling you you're a 10 gallon hat away from a brokeback mountain sequel for liking a new beetle.

Just buy an old beetle. They're way cooler anyway. Or a Porsche, I read on the Ferrari section they're one and the same anyway wink

Not at all.... Huge Herbie fan here, go for a classic if you want one, but please don't put stripes on it unless its a proper '63 in L87 Pearl White wink the 70's short bonnet models jus look wrong done up as Herbies!

I'm personally not a great fan of the Mk1 new Beetle, it was a bit of a hotch potch, and that huge dash makes it a weird drive.

I like the look of the New New Beetle though, the R model will be tempting when it arrives...

Not to be confused with diesel coupes: the transexuals of the car world.

"Is it gay to like the New Beetle?" - No, not at all, only to be seen actually driving one!

I don't think liking a particular car makes one gay. To think it does seems rather small-minded.

Do what you like, fk the rest.
