So I'm looking to buy a new car, except the insurance company I'm with wont insure me on the new car. I've had the policy with them now since July so if i was to cancel my insurance with them and change company would i loose out on the past 5/6months no claims? Is there anyway around this?

Thanks.

Yes, you would loose out on the 5/6 months.
No way around it, either cancel the policy, take out a new one with a different insurer, or keep the existing one running, and switch cars in July, if the extra years NCB is that important.

At the age of 19, yes, that extra years NCB is very important. frown Bugger!

Sounds like you're going to have to make some tough choices regarding the new car. At that age you're essentially at the mercy of your insurer as you need that NCB. And you really don't want to be getting rid of a car but keeping the policy running without telling them and getting another policy somewhere else. IIRC, because you're doing this to get a years NCB out of them you're technically defrauding them and failing to disclose information to them.

Funny old world. When I started my policy on an MX5 it cost me £80 to transfer to the S60 I bought. Then when I enquired about getting a RenaultSport Clio 172 the underwriter wouldn't touch it because it had 'Sport' in the name of the car and that didn't sit well with them. However, going to the MR2 Turbo was a no cost transfer...! Figure that out!

I think many insurance companies may frown upon a Golf GTI at 19 even if it is a very old model. Can you not wait to buy it until insurance is up?

Either gonna have to suck it up and suffer the loss or wait til you get that NCB.

On the plus side, another 6 months driving and a extra years makes a massive difference to insurance prices at your (our) age.

I can get insured on it at around the £1300 mark from a range of insureres on Confused.com but my insurance wont due to (i guess) engine size as i tried the other week on a Clio 182 and got the same response, no.

The reason i'd be changing the car as i've been offered the car as a swap and it'd be a very good deal for me but guess theres no way of beating the system so the deal is off frown

Or ask the insurance company what their limit is (i.e what "insurance group" car they are willing to insure up to),
I always get an itch to upgrade or move onto a another car so howzabout buying an interim car in the meantime e.g. an older 1.8l focus or 1.8l Honda Civic and then move on to a gti the following year,

My current reason for owning this 1998 Polo (cost me £350) was that reason. I decided to sell my previous car and save up some pennies for a better next car so got this as a winter run around. Popped it on Swapz.co.uk to see if anyone would offer me something of greater value and the Golf has popped up. Would only be keeping it until July time then be selling it on and putting the money towards the next car.

How have you contacted them? have you spoken to them on the phone? might be possible to discuss your case with an underwriter if you contact them directly and although the premium to change might be huge they might be able to do something.

I contacted them by phone yes. They used my current policy details but just changed the car over. Said i would need to fit an imobaliser though if i was to take the policy out. Then she said the price will be... "oh I'm sorry but we can't insure you on this car". I asked was it because of the engine size and she said that she can't find out why it was rejected.

I doubt this is it. Look back to my MR2 Turbo, which was a free upgrade when a Clio 172 was out of the question, despite being considerably more powerful and more challenging to drive! I suspect they're taking your age into account and looking at the many old Golf GTI's that have been crashed by young lads over the years.
