I have recently become very interested in the Lotus 49 and Honda RA271/2/3 Formula 1 cars of the late 60's. I now have the urge to build a replica of this type of vehicle or perhaps a kit car in a similar style. Does anybody know of any companies that sell such kits?

That is exactly what I am looking for! Nice one. However, I'm a bit gutted about the price - £21k!!! Even though that includes EVERYTHING, it's a bit out of my price range. Darn.

There's also the Xanthos 22. That's the american distributor's website; the actual company is based near Bristol in the UK, but for some reason they don't list the 22 on their own website.

I suspect that neither the Tiger nor the Xanthos would be easy to make road legal under the latest IVA regulations, though. PistonHeader DBSV8 has something very similar to the Xanthos (though his is based on a replica chassis by Peter Denty, apparently), but I believe it's (mis)registered as a 1960's Lotus Europa, which is very dodgy indeed - you wouldn't get away with it these days.

Oh, and whilst the Xanthos is very nicely built, it'll also be more than you'd like to pay, if the price of the Tiger frightens you.

There has been a long-standing project to produce a plans-built 'Haynes' 60's style single seater to complement the 'Seven'-type 'Locost' roadster ( from the 'Build Your Own Sportscar for £250' book), but it seems to be progressing very slowly, and some photos of it that came to light last year looked a bit of a dog.

There's a tiger era for sale at the moment for under £8k. It's on the web and shouldn't be hard to find.

My god, you can road register these things?! eek

Fantastic track car though, imagine taking one of them to spa/the ring cloud9
(desperately not trying to imagine hitting the barriers in one!)

Just get hold of Grand Prix Legends and a wheel, much cheaper! smile

Or wait for rFactor 2, which will feature 1960s F1 cars.

If only! Ideally I'd like to design and build my own single-seater but I don't have the mechanical expertise for that although I am a professional vehicle stylist so I could make it look good at least!

Good find. I'll have a read. Looks like it could provide me with many of the answers I'm after. Cheers.

Thanks for all the information Sam_68. Much appreciated. I might get in touch with Xanthos and arrange a visit as I live quite near Bristol. I'm going to keep looking into single-seater kits and hope that there's something out there that will fit my budget. If not, I'll just have to build something from scratch!

Ring Jim at Tiger, tell him your budget, he's a decent chap and in the current climate I'm pretty sure he'll be able to help somehow. Their new place is really impressive and it's well worth a nosey. If they still have that silver ERA 30 (Lotus 23b) rep for sale I'll be buying another lotto ticket this weekend smile
Thanks! I'll give him a buzz. I'd like to see these cars up close even if I can't actually afford them!
