Insurance question - managing multiple sets of NCD

Over the years owning multiple cars I managed to accrue multiple sets of NCD.
Now within the past year I have moved all but one of the fleet to classic policies, meaning that that I've multiple sets of NCD but only one car that requires NCD.
It's renewal time for this car, and I am wondering if it's worth paying the extra to protect the NCD on this car's policy. If I make a claim on an unprotected policy and lose my NCD, is there anything to stop me transferring the second set of NCD that I have earned on another car to replace my lost NCD at the time of next renewal?
