I find grabbing hold of some wood when making such statements useful. Invariably, having finally gotten rid of any points, I have a conversation such as this and before I know it, I get another lot!

God alone knows how - every time I do something stupid I end up doing it in front of a copper and getting pulled.

Me the same, I've been pulled plenty of times but, touch wood, no consequences. I guess being nice to them, polite, respectful goes a long way (along with boosting their ego's a bit!)
