Well many EVO readers mourned the loss of Chris Harris, I myself was more than happy that he would not be missed long term.

Seems that I was right with the announcement that as well Jethro bovingdon EVO have another wheel man who makes Harris look a little junior when it comes to going sideways.

All hail the daddy Tiff Needell, new boy at EVO

Very small tit bit in this months editorial. That saved my subscription

Sadly, the horse has bolted on this one, I think. I recall EVO being quite good back in the day. I was reading a recent issue on the can the other day, eyeing a pitifully small article about an Aston Martin V12 Rapide. It mentioned 'mining a rich seam of torque'. I think that about says it all. rolleyes

I guess the thing that all journalists must struggle with when writing about the same subject day-in, day-out is how to stay fresh with new similies and metaphors without sounding trite.

It must be difficult, I know I couldnt do it and I think the guys at EVO do the best job out of all the other car magazine journalists.

It's not as good as it used to be but for my money Evo is still far and away the best car magazine available. Car comes in at number 2 as I find some of their writers to be deeply irritating (that fat bloke Greg Fountain winds me up just looking at him) and their 'free' Green Car supplement - I'd rather do without and pay 50p less, thanks.

I can't coment on Tiff's writing credentials, but as a TV car reviewer and skilled driver, I think few can argue over this man's abilities.

He seems a 'proper chap', can vividly narrate while driving a car at it's limit and is definitely a Sideways King, if not Sideways Royalty, at the very least.

You can Youtube his 1999 review of the M5 vs XJR vs E55 if you need proof of that.

I, for one, shall not be mourning 'Monkey's' loss from the pages of EVO, particularly his EVO video contributions, in which he was painfully dull to watch and listen to.

Tiff joining EVO? Sounds good to me!

I used to read his stuff when employed by TG, and in the Magazine years ago. So pleased i have taken out my new subscription now!

Not all of us have access to airfields or wish to do endless 'trackdays'.

Evo's gone more and more towards cars most of us can't afford, blatant fanboyism towards certain brands and an increasing focus on what's quicker round a track.

Most of the team seem to run classics they've owned for years so I am always miffed when they manage to find ever more complex ways to split hairs between fabulous new cars in a never ending quest to say which is 'best'. It's missing the point, IMO.

There is already a thread with people moaning about EVO. It's an aspirational magazine FFS and I for one am more than happy with its content. Other magazines more suited to your requirements are available I'm sure.

yep and I am interested in quality road rockets for amateur drivers

I am sick to death of "professional" race car journalists (or the TG clowns) rating a car only on its ability to go sideways round a track (bored to death of this) or its ability to lap the ring in 0.3 seconds faster than the last car they knocked the back tyres out in 30 miles. This has nothing to do with real world performance cars imo.

but tiff has a bigger crime than this, he is one of the most boring presenters ever, he just sends me to sleep and those carefully rehearsed cheesy grins he does before going into power sliding mode makes me want to slap him.

One of the things i like about Harris is that he comes across on the whole as normal and not a presenter, although hes mostly interested in track race cars frown

One of the other things that myths me is when they slate a car in a review and then when they get one on the fleet actually realise its a half decent car to live with (the info i want) the polo GTi comes to mind at the moment.

just my worthless opinion of course

Print media as a whole's dying on its arse, anyway. Individual publications may ebb and flow but the advertising spend that provides the budget is generally drying up as readers find other ways to get their information ( the internet etc.).

Ever changing contributors to EVO will become an exercise in shuffling deckchairs in the near future.

In a roundabout way, you have a good point.

BUT

Evo has always been good at the road trips, here and abroad, the adventures therein and been great at describing what a lot of us can relate to.

Other mags are either track only, smoking rear tyres or boring as hell anal figure fests.

Evo used to be Boys Own and is now more Boyzone.

At least Tiff doesn't write press packs or brochures or present Renault TV...so we might have half a chance of unbiased comment....or maybe not....
