Hi all
Just a question of where I stand really.
I bought a renault megane (yes i know!!) Just under a year ago from a large used car dealer.
Fast forward to today where I want to part ex it for a civic type r and get told that it is an import!
It was imported about a month before I bought it but it has age related (58) plates.
When I bought it the dealer didn't say it was an import and it didn't say so in the advert.
Do I have any comeback with the dealer? I have not called them yet but will do tomorrow.
Any information would be good.

Quite common of car supermarkets to import cars; shouldn't really have an effect on values tbh.

Does it not say anything on the V5?

No real need for the dealer to declare it. The car was as advertised?

We are guessing it has been imported from southern ireland but we don't have any evidance for that.
I guess my question is legally do large car dealers have to declare that a car has been imported, I know they do if it is a cat d or a such.
If they do need to declare it than its worth a phone call but if legally they don't then I should of been more careful and its not worth calling them.
It does state on the v5 that it was first registered in 2008 and then registered in the uk in 2010 so I did miss that when I bought it, but again it comes back to should the dealer told me.

I'd still say no. It needs to have all the bits on as advertised, but not same as insurance w/o. As said earlier, common practice for car supermarket retailers.

If they said no it wasn't an import when asked that would be different.

Did you get the car for a good price?

I hate it that imports are frowned upon sometimes. I had te same experience with a Saab however I bought it for a good price and the new owner got it for a good price.

Very large car supermarket type place near sells quite a few imports from Cyprus. They don't inform you unless you ask them though. Salesman claimed they are cars that Cypriot dealers can't shift so they are auctioned off in bulk to UK dealers.

My neighbour (who's a used car dealer) also told me this

Why not sell it privately? That way you'll get more than part-ex anyway and won't need to bother about it being an import.

Chances are that it will not have the same specification as the UK cars...

The thing that would concern me more would be insurance.

If you didn't inform them it was an import (why I'd guess you didn't, as you didn't know) what affect it would have had had you been involved in an accident

Obviously you would have been insured, but values might differ somewhat - A lot of insurance companies also charge more for imports (although no idea why)

If it was previously used overseas (ie import) it will state this on the V5, nice and clear. Have you not looked?

Fair enough, I figured considering the size of the respective markets and the abundance of these cars, there would be no reason to import them...
