I have a 100,000 Boxster and on start up it rattles slightly for about one or two seconds and then is fine, it does have a full history and uses or drops no oil, can anyone advise if this might be a problem or am I just being paranoid?

Cheers guys

They all do, it's fine. Heat shields.

Do they have hydraulic lifters ?

If so it's nothing to worry about.

Sounds like chain tensioners to me - heat shields would rattle continuously. You could try using a slightly thicker oil - 10w40 fully synth, or replace the tensioners - I think there are 3 and are external so shouldn't be a huge job.

Suggest you post on Porsche forum, lots of discussion re water cooled engines and potential issues.

Cheers.

In fact, found the article showing the location of the chain tensioners:

look at pictures 15-17 - I'd be starting with these.

Nice guide, but getting to that side of the engine is a right pig of a job. frown

I agree it will be the tensioners.

They all do it!

It is just the exhaust vibrating when ice cold against the heat shields.

If it last a couple seconds it is def this.

The other common rattle is when the hydraulic lifters prime. Again only lasts a second.

true, but isn't everything on a boxster wink

A decent indie should be able to replace them for not too unfriendly a price. Might be worth trying a thicker oil first, if the noise reduces I'd definitely say tensioners.

And no, they don't all do it - none of my 3 boxsters did.

If the cams are chain driven then it will be the tensioners.
