Anyone got any advice about tyre choice? I need a pair of rears, Hankook Ventus £130 each Michelin Pilots £210 each, that's a big saving but is the extra dosh worth it?

Depends if you have become attached (emotionally) to your legs.

Evo issue 166 has a tyre test in it, the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo came out 2nd overall, beating Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli amungst others. Test was won by Conti Sport Contact 3 test size was 235/40 x 18 on an Audi s3.

The tyres fitted to my work van are some cheap brand and 9 months down the line i'm still in one piece, haven't crashed or anything.
I'd suggest if the majority of your journeys are local'ish you'd be fine on budgets.

What about looking for some decent branded part worn ones on Ebay? I know you can't be sure of the tyres life in this case but there are plenty of people who have bought ones with 7-8mm of tread left and are still alive.

I am a big fan of Hankook tyres, good grip and good wear rate with a supple ride. They are fitted as standard new fitment on some cars which is usually a good indicator of quality.Hankook are part owned by Michelin as well.

Yep, some Mk6 Golfs and new Fiesta models have them as OEM from the factory.

Hankook Ventus K105s were perfectly fine for my Focus. Obviously a 1.8 diesel shopper is in a different class to a Boxter in terms of performance, but the Hankooks are certainly not ditchfinders or some unknown Chinese dross.

I'm of the opinion the new Fulda Sport Control currently offers one of the best price / performance balances on the market.

I'd avoid cheapy lego budgets like your WingWangLees et al, but your Falken/Kumho/Hankooks offer decent tyres on a budget. Some actually punch well above their pricetag too.

Yes, my 528 came with almost new cheap tyres (Champiros) on the front. Powering off a damp roundabout they completely let go and I understeered into the next lane.

Replaced them with Falkens which are excellent.

Nexen seem to be well reviewed in the US, and seem to offer exceptional value for money. In the US they even offer a 60k mileage warranty. Well reviewed for traction wet and dry, and low noise good cornering.

I don't think you do get what you pay for with tyres, I find Pirellis overpriced, quick wearing and overall poor value, I'm sure some cheap tyres are not well made, but it's not necessarily the case that the more you pay the better tyre you get.

Avoid the cheap Chinese tyres at all costs.
I have Wanli fitted to an Astra I have, utter ste to the point of being dangerous.
Same with Ultragrip, the worst named tyres ever. No grip at all.
Nankangs are rubbish.
I had some Enduro on a Celica that were actually suprisingly good, on a Golf GTI they were noisy as hell and sounded like a wheel bearing. Changed for Falkens, problem solved.

Falken are great for the money, and Hankooks have good write ups as the OP mentioned and are well priced.

I always put Continentals on the M3, and had them on a Fabia VRS. Excellent all round tyres but pricey.

I certainly would give those Hankooks a try at that price given the good reviews.

Falken 452 are a very good 'budget' performance tyre.

Hankook RS-2s on the Corrado - fantastic.
Hankook Icebear W300s on the Corrado (for winter) - fantastic.
Hankook ZIEX-912 on the Fabia vRS - seem fine.

Got my thumbs up as a manufacturer.

Falken 452 are a good budget option, as are Uniroyal Rainsports (but a bit more mid range) and comparable performance to the Eagle F1 but softer side walls.

Hankooks look like an interesting option from the above.

Also Accelera sound like a rubbish brand but plenty are running them on Alfa's and even had some on the back of my last Brera, never caused me any issues.

Avoid Pirelli P6000 like the plague!!!!! I cannot emphasise this point further, utter rubbish.
