Why does nobody want to do Part Ex any more?
Discussion
Im trying to shift a car (this isnt an advert!)
Im fully open to considering part-ex or swapps.
However even people who say in their adverts that they will consider part ex, and even specifically for the model im selling, the ALL seem never to reply, or worse they say yes send details, then blank you.... this is often without seeing the car (photos or in person) or even asking the price of it, or even the condition!
now i must stress that this isnt a gripe about a particular car im trying to sell, its been my experience over the last few years. private, not trade.
I think people are just generally only looking to do a part ex if what they are getting is clearly the world's best ever bargain.

I seem to be able to shift cars on PX very easily, albeit through dealers. In the past few years I've managed to get rid of them for more than I'd have had the cheek to advertise them for in private sales.
Really??? normally ive been offered b etween half and 3/4 the market value from dealers - which yoiu have to expect, they have top make a proffit and offer a warranty (sometimes) which is why i have never part ex-ed with a dealer.maybe you have just paid over the odds for the car you bought from them, instead?

As darkcat said, never received a good offer on any car that I have tried to part ex. Some examples:-maybe you have just paid over the odds for the car you bought from them, instead?
2 year old Alfa 156 - Offered 6k!!!, sold for nearly 11k privately
5 year old Alfa Brera - Offered 6.5k, sold for 9.8k privately
A guy in Subaru Cardiff laughed in my face when I asked about part exchanging my TVR T350c for the first RB320, stating that we would NEVER shift it, so unreliable, crap etc.
Today the T350c is probably worth double the Impreza and I was prepared to pay him £12k for the swap at the time!!
Same dealer now shut down, shame!

Two specific examples:maybe you have just paid over the odds for the car you bought from them, instead?
Went to buy a NEW Mercedes - Merc dealer. Discussed the spec and a price. Negotiated a discount on the new price (my wife's a hard haggler), then threw in my old car as PX. I thought it was worth perhaps £2500 but would have settled for £1800 for a quick sale. They took off me for £3K - it was their first offer and I bit their hand off at the elbow.
Went to view a 2yo car at a generic dealer. Negotiated price down on the fact that the rest of the cars they had were small hatchbacks and the one I wanted was my current 3-litre 6-cylinder automatic estate which they didn't know much about and didn't really know how to sell (true - he told me this). He knocked off a little from their advertised price and then I threw-in the car we'd driven up in as a PX (Toyota Avensis) for which we got about £500 more than I was expecting.
Both my PX cars were presented well, had lots of history/documentation and both times I received comments from the dealers to that effect.
I have a couple more examples along the same lines.

Perhaps it's that I tend to take near-end-of-life cars for PX and my expectations for their worth are lower than realistic then?2 year old Alfa 156 - Offered 6k!!!, sold for nearly 11k privately
