Hi guys. Sorry for a "what car" thread, especially one that has been brought up plenty of times already, but here goes: As of today ( 1/1/2012 ) I have 17 days to go until I can start taking driving lessons and for the last few months have been pondering what car I should buy. I'm looking for something not necessarily fast, but fun i.e handles well and enjoyable to drive. In terms of budget, I have a good job and have already saved up a good amount of money so this is not really an issue.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks smile.

What's 'a good amount of money' and have you got an equally good amount set aside for insurance too?

I was waiting on that one lol. Can you really get an MX5 for a first car? Presumably it would have to be a mk1 but I thought insurance would be through the roof on one.

There must be a budget. Give us something to go on.... How many doors/ seats/ insurance groups/ mpg/ diesel/ petrol.

My first suggestion based upon your criteria is a GT3. However I suspect this is not what you are after!

Mike

Also be aware that whilst learning to drive insurance is generally cheaper. As soon as you pass the insurance will rocket....

Sorry to piss on your thread, but most things that will be "enjoyable to drive" will come with suitably "enjoyable" insurance quotes.

Have you checked things out for any of the cars you have in mind?

My girlfriend is looking for a car at the moment, and compared to when I started driving (7 or so years ago) insurance is astronomically expensive, and I thought it was bad back then frown

Ok so you have a budget. What is your budget? Tbh though, an mx5 of some age will fit your budget unless you have silly money in which case you wouldnt be worried about insuring an mx5 smile

I have around £2000 saved already and earn £750 / month as an apprentice, of which almost none gets spent so by the time I pass my test and actually come to buy my car, I should have a good chunk more.

Dull, but some kind of Focus. Plenty about (from £500-£10k depending on budget and east to sell on, easy on insurance (as far as any car is for a new driver), small enough to be easy but big enough to have a bit of metal around you if you pass.

Why don't you wait and see if you can drive first...then you can go out and buy the typical MX5 jobby and be a baa.

Alternatively. you can tell us what you will use it for and , what kind of miles you'll do etc...

I hate WHAT CAR threads

Probably best to avoid threads with "what car should I buy" in the title then.

^^ your new car! 1.4l polo, just pass your test, buy the car (its on for 395 pounds only), insure the car, add a supercharger, and you are good to go!

Which order you do the above in will be important though wink

They are (for a first car) staggeringly expensive to insure.

A GT3 sound good biglaugh... but probably a bit unrealistic frown.

In terms of criteria, which I should have specified in the first place ( my bad ), I'm looking for something preferably with 2 doors, 4 seats and a petrol. As far as everything else goes - mpg, insurance groups, etc I'm not really sure. At this point I don't have a definite picture in my head of what I want, I'm just looking for ideas to work from.

Ford Sportka or Panda 100HP fulfill the fun but not too expensive to insure requirement.

2k is a nice amount for a first car but the insurance will likely cost at least that much again....... so think VERY cheap car + insurance.

Paying the insurance monthly is a bit of a rip-off and best avoided if possible.
