Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible set for Detroit

Soft-top version of 200mph super-Mustang on the way

Not a soft-top GT500
Not a soft-top GT500
A convertible version of the oh-my-word-that's powerful 650hp Shelby GT500 Mustang is set to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show next week.

The drop-top version of the outrageous coupe (which was unveiled at last year's LA show) is hardly a huge surprise, however - GM arch-rival, the Camaro ZL1, has been publicly earmarked for a convertible version from day one.

As for the finer details, you'll have to wait until the official unveiling, but we do know that the same 5.8-litre supercharged V8 will be providing the same 650hp and 600lb ft of torque. Though we doubt that you'll get the same 200mph top end with a canvas roof - so expect to see Ford bring some sort of electronic speed limiter into play.

Happily live without the soft top - but a long time ago I used to get to drive a lot of the V8s from GM and Ford and I still would love a Mustang (much more than a 'vette or Camaro) so I have to say this is a big lust car for me!! Which I guess shows the power of the heart cos in a real world way this makes no sense at all if I use my head...

Can see the appeal of a soft top version for a more laid back facial rearrangement, but I'd have a hell of a hard time ticking that box when the tin top's available.

Such a close call between this and the ZL1 too. America's knocking some stunners out of late.

I searched the internet to find out if the Mustang still had a live rear axle (it does) and came across this:

[Mustang GT's] live axle deals with pitching and pocked pavement with much of the sure-footed poise of an independent setup. [The Camaro's] rear end discombobulates and dances while accelerating over rough pavement. [Dodge Challenger] sways, it bobs, and it squats back and squirms at full throttle like a fat man settling onto a cold toilet seat. --- Car and Driver

Drive a convertible with a lightly-silenced V8 through a tunnel and then tell me you'd still prefer a tin-top smile

Add the supercharger whine on top and you've got to be in love smile

Bad day at the office?

If a 650hp V8 convertible can be considered yawn inducing...

^^^^ Nah, no bad day, on hols actually smile The yank formula has worn off as any kind of treat. Where is the AWD Turbo monster from Ford? Guess what, it's a bespoke rally car, not available to the citizen customer. However this kind of outdated (by a century) abhorrence is on the showroom floor. Why? What purpose does it serve apart from allowing the penis-challenged a chance to accellerate in a stright line?

None.

Move on, nothing to see here.....

So it has a live axle. So what? Its designed for america, where the alpine road doesn't exist.

I can guarantee that anyone who says its boring has never driven one. grrr

Had 350Hp V8 live axle car, now own 300Hp AWD turbo. I can tell you from experience which is better/more fun.

Ford USA wouldn't have a clue.

But you surely wouldn't call the Yank boring would you?
