Video: The 200mph Audi A1

German tuner MTM proves its little A1 Nardo is easily capable of the double-ton

There's often a healthy scepticism of aftermarket tuners at PHHQ, but occasionally our interested is piqued by something sufficiently fast or outrageous. And this, the Audi A1 Nardo Edition from VW group specialist MTM, is definitely both.

It's been around for a little while - since summer last year, it seems - but had passed us by until we spotted this video on a random YouTube trawl. And there's something about 320km/h (200mph) in an Audi A1 that rather grabs your attention. So we thought we'd investigate a little further.

Turns out that, in order to achieve its 324km/h top speed (and 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds), MTM has blessed the A1 with the 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine from the TT RS and RS3, and tweaked it to give 500hp and 442lb ft of torque.

Hilariously, that power goes to the front-wheels only, via a six-speed manual transmission. But don't worry, there is a limited-slip differential - so there'll be no need to fear torque steer. Ahem.

i can see a trip to MTM in my not to distant future, I wonder how much that engine mod costs

I wander if they would have upgraded the brakes in 'The Beast!' If one of those cars would have changed lanes it would have been game over....

I'm considering making a phone call to Audi parts department and asking the price of a TTRS engine. Don't know what sort of reply i will get

Crazy and funny. Would of been amusing driving one of those lorries seeing that flying past at 180+mph.

Ive done 160mph on an autobhan but didnt dare do it past other vehicles. They are keen ha.

By my reckoning he hits 322km/h on the GPS run, which the internet tells me equates to 200.08mph...

Frankly, if was going anywhere near 200mph the last thing I would be paying attention to is the speedometer.

I've only got anywhere near that once, and it was on a nice big runway. And it still scared the bejesus out of me

Does that not depend on the car... I think we should just stick to 1km/h = 0.621mph!
